Can I use Windows 11's Hello PIN to unlock 1Password 8?

Upgraded a family member's PC to Windows 11 and enabled Windows Hello's PIN code (this PC does not have a fingerprint sensor or a camera).

Can I use this PIN to unlock 1Password 8, instead of the master password?

It does not seem to work and your help page only mentions a fingerprint sensor and a camera, but not a PIN.

1Password Version: 8
Extension Version: n/a
OS Version: Windows 11

  • Hi @XIII, thanks for your message. Please excuse the delay in response.

On devices where a fingerprint sensor or camera are not available, when Windows Hello and a PIN are setup, 1Password 8 should default to the Windows Hello PIN on subsequent unlocks after the account password is entered for the first time (after a restart of the device or the 1Password app was completely terminated):

If you are still having difficulties on this Windows 11 device, can you please let us know what behaviour you are seeing once 1Password 8 is locked (Ctrl + Shift + L) and you attempt to unlock again? Are you not seeing the Windows Security prompt as depicted above?

    It suddenly started working.

But it's useless for my use case because the master password is still required after every boot (unlike on Apple systems).

  • Hey @keitht1958

Windows Hello is not available for the 1Password.com web app; only the desktop app. :) Glad to hear it is working in the desktop app for you.

This is something that engineering and security are looking at. It may be possible to have this work differently on TPM equipped computers. I don't know for sure at this point, but that is something we're hoping will be workable.

    That would be nice!

    (This PC has TPM 2.0)

Same here, extremely frustrating regarding the work sometimes but not work most of the time with windows hello. Windows 11 Pro Dell XPS 15 (9510) and 1 Password 8. My desktop computer works every time, but logs in with PIN hence bypasses windows hello!

  • Hi @emack22, sorry to hear of these troubles. Could you tell me a little more about this? 👇

Same here, extremely frustrating regarding the work sometimes but not work most of the time with windows hello.

For example, are you not being prompted to unlock with Hello when you open 1Password? Any details you can share here could help us track down the specifics.

PIN is one method used by Windows Hello. Are you looking to log in with biometrics instead, for example?

Thanks - we're looking forward to learning what we might do better here. And we appreciate your engagement on this!
