1P8 beta keeps popping to foreground and stealing focus

Hi, I'm running macOS Monterey (12.3.1) with 1P8 beta (8.7.0, build 80700095), on a 2019 iMac 27", and every time I do seemingly anything that shifts focus in a browser—refresh or load a page, switch to a different browser, even tab between fields on one page—the 1Password standalone app pops to the foreground and steals focus from what I was doing. This is both disruptive and maddening.

I regularly use Safari Technology Preview, Chrome, and Firefox, with Safari TP as my default browser.

I saw in a similar post on Reddit that this was a known issue and the team is working on it—is there a public issue tracking website that I could follow along on or subscribe to? Please advise.

I've been using 1P for years and generally am a big fan of it—thank you for the great product.

An update: the support representative had me remove and reinstall 1Password completely, and this seems to have done the trick. Here is the procedure they had me follow, in case it's useful to anyone else:

    1. Quit all open web browsers.
    2. Right-click 1Password mini in the menu bar, then Quit. (If you see "Quit 1Password Completely", that's 1Password 7.)
    3. Drag 1Password from the Applications folder to the Trash. Do not use an "app cleaner" or "uninstaller" tool to remove the app or additional files. If prompted, enter the password you use to sign in to your Mac.
    4. Restart your Mac.
    5. Download the installer for 1Password 8 beta from the 1Password website.
    6. Quit any open web browsers and then install 1Password.
    7. Open and unlock 1Password before opening your web browser.

Also, FWIW, my guess was that the problem had something to do with the extension, since it was happening on focus shifts in the browser and not other apps, and that it was the extension over-enthusiastically requesting the main application to activate.

  • Thanks for providing this update for the community, @ravasthi - and it's great to hear that the issue is resolved! I hope that these steps will prove useful to anyone else who encounters the problem.

And if anyone is still having the issue despite trying those steps, feel free to contact us directly and we'll be happy to help! 😃

Welcome @PeterG_1P. Any progress in determining how/why this happens, and coming up with a non-workaround based fix? It's incredibly irritating when it happens.
