A while back, while I was trying to create exports from a few other password managers in a macOS guest in Parallels, I discovered that they would launch, but with blank UIs.

And a few weeks ago, I found the same was true of 1Password 8. I thought these might be related to running on Big Sur. So I created a Monterey VM. Same thing. I decided today it was time to solve this problem (Parallel's forums are useless). Here's the solution for anyone else who stumbles upon this.

Quit 1Password completely, and in Terminal, run:

open /Applications/1Password.app --args --disable-gpu

Success.

This will work for other Electron-based apps too.

  • Hey there @MrC

Thanks for posting this. You're right – it seems that graphical acceleration is a bit of a problem in general in virtual machines running macOS. I've seen the same thing with 1Password, and with some web browsers as well, so turning off acceleration is definitely a good idea in those cases.

Hopefully we'll see some virtual GPU support before long, which will make things a lot easier. :)
