"Embrace change, and be curious. If you support users, learn to view things from their perspective, and that there isn't always one right answer."

Tell us about your role
In my role as a Risk Advisor for the IT Security Office at Duke University, I am the primary administrator for our 1Password for Business instance.

Why is cybersecurity important in your industry?
Cybersecurity and privacy are important on a college campus both for our students and employees, but also for the nature of the data we work with in both our research and teaching missions. The operational scope of a large university more closely mirrors a city and it's various business, than it does a single large industry. We have everything from athletic stadiums and teams, to police departments. Medical care facilities, to major research labs. Each have unique needs to address.

When did you first learn about 1Password?
I first learned about 1Password in early 2020, as our team was looking for a best of breed replacement for our existing password manager.

What are the biggest challenges facing security teams right now?
As a risk advisor, one of the biggest challenges is addressing the needs created by the expansion of regulatory compliance requirements both at federal and state level. And in no area is it more clearly understood that Artificial Intelligence can be used for good and for bad. The battle continues can the good guys keep the bad guys in check?

What excites you about the future of 1Password?
1Password has been an excellent vendor to partner with, as they are always open to hearing the customer's perspective on things. They've also shown that they are constantly innovating. Just in the short period of time we've been involved, they've rolled out support for MFA one time passwords, and Passkeys to support the WebAuthn protocol.

Why do you love 1Password?
While 1Password for Business is important to our cyber security efforts, I personally get more from my 1Password for Families account, which is about far more than just saving passwords. I'm always finding new things I can add to 1Password as the place where I keep important secrets and documents.

What's your top tip for other cybersecurity/IT professionals that has helped you navigate or grow your career in the industry?
Embrace change, and be curious. If you support users, learn to view things from their perspective, and that there isn't always one right answer.
