How can I retrieve a texted 2 factor security code without having the 1 password app close?

I have the One Password app on my iphone. When logging into a website that requires a texted security code, the One Password app closes after I leave it to retrieve the code in the text app. The texted code flashes at the top of the phone too quickly for me to verify it.
By that time I retrieve the code from the text app, the One Password app has closed.
