1Password database in Firefox different that that for Safari

I am running MacOS 10.14.6, Safari 13.0.3 and Firefox 70.0.1. My database sync is via iCloud which works on all of my IOS devices.

When I run the Safari extension on my Mac, if the password is needed, I just enter in the normal database encryption password. However on Firefox that does not work. I have to enter in the different password for the 1password website. Once I am logged in I see an older version of the database (from 2018) which has 1/10th of my entries. In contrast when I login on my Mac to Safari it only asks for my database password and shows me all of the entries in my icloud database.

I am stumped as to why the two extensions act differently.

1Password Version: 7.3.2
Extension Version: 7.3.2 (Safari), 1.16.2 (Firefox)
OS Version: MacOS 10.14.6
Sync Type: iCloud

@dmoor - I'm sorry for the trouble. It sounds very much as if you may have both your older, standalone, Primary vault still in your 1Password for Mac app, as well as your 1password.com account's Personal (or Private) vault. When you create a 1Password account and add it to the 1Password app, it's expected that you'll migrate your data from your standalone vault to your 1password.com account. In almost all cases, there's just no need to continue along with both vaults, and in fact, though they will be identical at first if you move your data over, as you keep using both vaults, the data will begin to diverge more and more over time, if you don't remove the older, no-longer-necessary Primary vault. This sounds like it might be what happened to you? When you look in 1Password 7 for Mac, under 1Password > Preferences > Vaults, what do you see? How many vaults are there, and what are their names?

There are two vaults: primary and Demo. The Primary is synched with iCloud.

    @dmoor:

thank you for the confirmation. As Lars wrote, yhis is why you are seeing this behavior. You should only be using the vaults on 1Password.com. If you want to keep using a separate iCloud vault in addition to your 1Password.com data, you will need this different password.

    The way 1Password unlocks is:

    • If a Primary vault exists, then 1Password unlocks using the Master Password for that vault, regardless of what, if any, memberships are signed in
    • If a single 1Password membership is signed in, then 1Password unlocks using the Master Password for that membership account
    • If multiple memberships are signed in then unlock using the Master Password of the first added membership

If you are using a 1Password membership we generally recommend removing the Primary vault.

Thanks for your detailed responses. So if I am on my Mac where a primary vault exists, why does Safari open the Primary Vault and Firefox the 1Password Web vault?

I've been looking at the documentation about how to migrate to the 1Password vault. The video shows a login to the 1password.com (showing the key). I don't see that. I just see the password entry page. I never get a prompt asking if I want to add my account to the app after login.

@dmoor - if you're able to see your 1password.com vault in the 1Password extension in Firefox, that would be because you've installed 1Password X instead of the usual ("desktop app required") 1Password extension in Firefox. Open Firefox's Tools > AddOns > Extensions and look at the 1Password extension there. Does it say "1Password?" Or "1Password X?" And what version is it? 1Password X is our newest extension, and it works only with a 1Password account, not with any local vaults, in Firefox.

If you have a 1Password account and want to migrate the data in your local standalone Primary vault into the 1password.com account's vault, instructions are here. You need to add the account into 1Password for Mac first, then follow the rest of those instructions to migrate the data and finally, to remove the no-longer-needed standalone vaults. Remove "Demo" first, then remove "Primary."

Ah, there are two extensions! I had both. Got rid of the X one and now firefox is working.

The web video shows the user logging into a 1password account (I assume, since the key is shown). I don't see the key when I bring up 1password, so I must just be logging in locally? Under Preferences/accounts I do see my account. On the side frame I see my name (with "two vaults" under it), All Vaults (2 Vaults), My name again in smaller type with "Personal" and "Old Entries" under it, On My Mac with Demo under it, and on iCloud with Primary under it. Very confusing since it says "2 vaults" several times but I see, er, 4? (Personal, Old Entries, Demo, Primary). I have no idea which vaults are the "2 vaults".

@dmoor - your name would be your 1password.com account; the indented vaults underneath that are part of your 1password.com account. You can verify this by signing into your account in a browser at https://my.1password.com -- if what you just wrote here is accurate, you should see "Personal" and "Old Entries" there, but not either "Primary" or "Demo." Am I right? If so - and if you have all four vaults in 1Password 7 for Mac, then your task will be only to move over any items from Primary to either Personal or Old Entries (I assume nothing in Demo is important to you, but best to check, and move anything from there as well, if necessary), then delete first Old Entries and finally Primary, leaving you running only your 1password.com account.
