Cannot complete upgrade

I have just updated to the new MacBook Pro, with Catalina. The version installed at the time of the switchover, 1Password 7, works just fine, but the app store says there is an update. So I clicked on "update". It starts filling the circle, then with one small sliver left, says to quit 1Password. So I click on it in the menu bar and Quit Completely and the icon disappears from the menu bar. Good enough. Then I go back to the app store, try again, and it just loops back on the process, so it will not proceed with the update. What should I try?
