I need to sign in to 1Password once for Safari browser and again for the new Firefox extension
I may well be doing something incorrectly but, to use 1Password on my Mac, I need to sign in to the 1Password app and this gives me access to passwords when using some mac apps and also in the Safari browser but I then need to sign in to 1Password again to use the new Firefox browser extension. Also, if I shut down the Firefox browser and open it again, I need to sign in to 1Password again. Am I missing something?
Thanks, Paul

Hi @PaulP1!
If you are using 1Password X, this is normal :) 1Password X is our latest version of the browser extension which does not require the desktop app to run. It's a completely independent extension, so that explains why it unlocks separately from the main 1Password app and the other extensions ;)
Also, because it lives entirely in the browser, it is normal that it asks to login again when you close and reopen your browser, so this is also normal.

Thx ag_ana,
Is 1Password X so much better than the previous version of the browser extension? Just wondering who the target audience is for the product as it looks like it would be useful if I didn't have the desktop version running but I can't imagine being a 1Password user and then not running it on the desktop. Anyway, unless there's a very good reason to use the X version, I'll change back to the one that I only need to sign in to once.
Having said all that, I have been a loyal user of 1Password for many years and love it. Thanks for a great product.0 -
@PaulP1 - it depends how you're using 1Password and what you're trying to do. 1Password X works directly with a 1password.com account and doesn't work with local data. In other words, if you have standalone 1Password data synced via iCloud or Dropbox, etc, you wouldn't be able to use 1Password X at all with that, and would need our usual "desktop app required" extension. But if you have only a 1password.com account and no standalone vaults, you can use 1Password X if you prefer it. It does have several advantages/features that the companion extension doesn't; inline filling, the ability to work without a native 1Password app (and thus, to be installable on systems where we don't even have a native app, like Linux and Chrome OS or even Solaris). But if you have a 1Password account, it's really a matter of choice - you can use either one.

Thanks for the explanation, Lars. That makes it much clearer.
I do like the inline filling that's in the X version so would it be possible to incorporate some of the newer advantages/features from the X version back into the "desktop app required" version? Or allow X to see that I've already signed into 1Password desktop and then allow me to use it without needing to sign in again. Just so that I won't need to sign in to 1Password twice to use those features. And also, can the new features be added to the Safari add-on - I use both Firefox and Safari?

Inline filling is an exclusive feature for 1Password X, but you can do the second thing: if you enable Desktop App Integration (currently only available in the 1Password X Beta), the extension will know the lock state of the main desktop app ;)

We don't have anything to announce about this yet, but thank you for sharing your wishes :)

Thanks ag_ana. I'll try the 1Password X beta.

I've looked for 1Password X beta but I can only find it for Chrome, not Firefox. Is there a Firefox version?
Also, to run 1Password X beta to enable "Desktop App Integration", do I need to also run the beta version of 1Password on macOS? I'm reluctant to go that far into the beta world.0 -

Not at the moment, we only have it for Chrome.

Yes, you will need 1Password for Mac 7.3 BETA-4 or newer to beta test the feature before it's published to the stable channel.
