Lost the local password

I have been using 1Password for about 8 years. In the beginning, all the devices were synced with Dropbox. When 1Password became the cloud-bassed, I kept the Dropbox synch because I was able to use the easy-to-type local master password instead of the hard-to-type cloud-based master password. This also works with browser plugins except for 1PasswordX.

Today, I was struggling with inviting a family member, and accidentally I removed the local vault. And of course, I lost the local password to access this Mac all over the places. The Dropbox sync file is still good. I brought the vault back but I can't find the way to bring the local master password back. Any help would be appreciated.

1Password Version: 7.4.1
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: OSX 10.13.6
Sync Type: Dropbox

    Hi @madflute!

We normally recommend the Master Password that you use for your 1Password account to be the same as the one you have been using for your old vault. Have you considered updating the Master Password for your 1Password account to match the one of your Primary vault instead?

The old vault password which I use locally is easier to type and I can type fast so people around me can't see what I am typing, while this is not a secure password since there is no special character nor capital letter. The one I use for my cloud master password is much more complexed and hard to guess but not easy to type. In fact, I use the local 1Password to copy/paste the cloud master password. I don't suppose you are suggesting the cloud master password to be as easy as the one I have been using on my local, correct?

Ideally not. Instead we'd recommend typing your 1Password.com password to unlock 1Password. If you find 1Password is locking too frequently you can adjust what conditions it locks under using these instructions:

How to set 1Password to lock automatically

What you've been doing (having a "Primary" vault as well as a 1Password.com account) is not a configuration that we recommend.

Hi, that is not the issue. The issue is I made the cloud account master password intentionally confusing so I need local 1Password tor that. It still works as I want on my MBP. I need to put my MacPro to behave the same.

Question. Is Pref > Security > Master password local or cloud? Can I change this to put the way it used to work on my environment?

    @madflute:

As Ben wrote, this is not a configuration that we recommend. However, if you really want it, just make sure that the Dropbox vault is the first one in your 1Password app, so the app will be unlocked with the Master Password of that vault.

    The way 1Password unlocks is:

    • If a Primary vault exists, then it unlocks using the Master Password for that vault, regardless of what, if any, memberships are signed in
    • If a single 1Password membership is signed in, then it unlocks using the Master Password for that membership account
    • If multiple memberships are signed in, then it unlocks using the Master Password of the first added membership

These are each exclusive scenarios. For example, if multiple memberships are signed in, you cannot unlock 1Password using the Master Password of the second account that was added.

So in your case, you will probably have to add your Dropbox vault, remove your 1Password account and add it again so 1Password will not unlock with that Master Password anymore, but will use the Dropbox one instead.
