Change stand alone vault master password and not via website
Just installed 1Password 7.4 on MacOs 10.15 during trial period. I am confused regarding changing the master password for the local stand-alone personal vault. The instructions here https://support.1password.com/change-master-password/ make no sense. The preferences panel on the Security tab does not have an option to change the master password. Instead, the Accounts tab has a button Change Master Password, however this seems to refer to the online web account Master Password.
Is it possible to change the local stand-alone vault master password without changing the website account password? I want these to be separate and that the stand-alone vault master password resides only on the computer and would never be uploaded or transmitted anywhere. Please clarify how 1Password functions. Also the 'white paper' at this link in in fact white--i.e. the document does not load and is blank (in Chrome Canary.) Thanks.

Hi @upcountry

I'd be happy to look into that further for you but first I think it might help to clarify the second portion of your post...

The Master Password is never transmitted / uploaded to 1Password.com regardless. From our guide about the 1Password security model:
Your Master Password is never stored alongside your 1Password data or transmitted over the network. Taking this precaution is a bit like making sure the key to a safe isn’t kept right next to it: Keeping the two separate makes everything more secure. The same principle applies here.
The white paper goes into additional detail about how we accomplish that.

Chrome seems to be having difficulties rendering the white paper, but if you download the PDF and open it in the PDF viewer of your choice you should be able to view it. :) From a customer service perspective we generally do not recommend using standalone vaults alongside membership vaults as doing so tends to cause confusion.

OK I've skimmed the white paper so I understand the 2sdk model ~ but I remember back in the day before the spread of web sites that this was more of a standalone application. I would like to use it in that mode and only have the vault data reside on the mac or any device I manually copy it to and not ever be uploaded to any server. Is that possible and how to I configure that ?

So, could you clarify the difference between the 'membership vault' and 'stand-alone vaults' and how to enable/configure the latter ? The paper doesn't specifically refer to those terms.

The white paper as well as the bulk of our documentation is about memberships and their associated vaults. The white paper doesn't get into standalone as that is no longer something that we advertise or recommend. While standalone operation is still possible for those who are familiar and comfortable with it, it isn't a direction I point people in. Membership is the way forward.

Sure, I grok that but I would like more information on sandalone vaults anyway since that's one of the first things I read on the website before signing up. Where could I see that ?

Beyond the information available in our sync your 1Password data guide as well as various threads in this forum I'm not aware of any additional information that is available on standalone.
