How do I get the Chrome Extension to function?
Long time user of 1PW
Chrome extension installs but does not access 1Password desktop app. Hence, no 1PW drop down selections within Chrome. I haven't used my iMac for several months. When I attempted to open 1Password initially I received a prompt telling me 1Password needed to be in my application folder (it was) in order for it to work. I selected "show in Finder" on the prompt panel. It showed me a Finder page with a file copy of 1password (v7.4.1/145mb) in the private>var>folders>vp1>md195.... etc. As the file is hidden I'm not able to delete it (why is it there in the first place?).
I can now open 1Password in the Application Folder without any more strange prompts. However, the Chrome extension refuses to open even though it's installed. When I click on the extension, I see a brief flash of the opened 1PW app, then Chrome page reappears but nothing else. I uninstalled Chrome Extension and even 1Password in the App Folder, then reinstalled. No change in behavior.
This is maddening. 1Password used to be so simple to use. Now it's gotten a lot more complicated including its use on a web page about which I see no purpose.
Help!
1Password Version: 7.4.1
Extension Version: 4.7.5.90
OS Version: OS X 10.14.6
Sync Type: Dropbox

Hi @2stepbay!
Can you please try quitting 1Password completely (right-click on 1Password mini in the menu bar at the top right of your screen > Quit 1Password Completely), and then relaunch 1Password and your Chrome browser?
Now it's gotten a lot more complicated including its use on a web page about which I see no purpose.
Can you give us an example of such a page?

Thanks for your response.
There exists 2 copies of 1PW on my system. One in the application folder; the other in this location:
/private/var/folders/vp/md1_95ws1fs8yd9wtkxwfnv00000gp/T/AppTranslocation/33066F6D-4111-4A2F-A075-0CE5D8AF2647/d/1Password 7.app/Contents/MacOS/1Password 7
txtAs you suggested, I quit the mini menubar version. Plus I removed the related chrome extension. Restarted the computer. Then I opened 1PW from the application folder, then in preferences select browser extension. That opened Chrome and let me install the extension. However, the behavior is the same, i.e. nothing loads when I click on the extension icon; just a brief flash on the web page.
Back to the other version in the system. I cannot delete the version in the /private folder. And that's the version that opens even though I click on the 1PW app in the Application folder. Per Activity Monitor, here's the Files and Port log for 1Password after I open the app:

Here's the Finder prompt that appears when I open 1PW
I checked 1PW file location on my MacBook Pro. Only version is in the Application folder.
I noticed when I select 1PW on my iMac, the OS opens an ejectable folder in the /private section containing 1PW. That doesn't happen on the MacBook Pro.
At a loss.... 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

I cannot delete the version in the /private folder. And that's the version that opens even though I click on the 1PW app in the Application folder.
I think this is the problem. In order to work correctly, 1Password must be installed and run from your Applications folder. If it is run from any other place in your system, it will show the error message that you are seeing.
Do you remember how you managed to install 1Password in your /private folder? It should be only inside your Applications folder.
I cannot delete the version in the /private folder.
What happens exactly when you try to delete it?

I have been using 1PW for over 5 years. This odd behavior started when I started using my iMac the other day after taking it out of storage (it had been there since Sept). Prior to that I never had a problem with 1PW or the Chrome extension.
1PW was initially installed in my Applications folder (there's a copy there). Why the OS creates a version of 1PW in the /private folder each time it opens is beyond my pay grade. Up until yesterday, I had never seen that prompt before. As I mentioned, no such problem exists on my MacBook Pro. Both computers access the password database files from my Dropbox a/c.
Perhaps I ought to fully remove the app from the computer, then reinstall. Ideally, there's a workaround precluding that step. Looking for answers. Thanks

We can certainly try reinstalling, and see if that helps clean up whatever happened to your system. Please do the following:
- Completely quit 1Password again, as you have done once already (please refer to my previous post for the instructions)
- Drag the 1Password application to the Trash (without using any uninstaller tools, or you risk deleting your data together with the app; just dragging the app to the Trash will be enough)
- Reboot your Mac
- Download a fresh copy of 1Password 7
- Install 1Password 7
- Launch your Chrome browser
Do you see the same error message now?

Reinstalling the app seemed to rectify the problem as no app now showing in the /private folder and Chrome extension now opening as designed. Really curious how the problem was created in the first place. As I mentioned I have been using 1PW for quite a while on 2 machines plus my iphone and ipad. This is the 1st time I have had a this type of problem.
Thanks for your help.
