Can no longer edit entries.

I have had standalone 1Password for about 15 years with all kinds of private data and over 200 logins. It has been very useful, and I have updated regularly. Recently, on 1Password 6 and now 7 (updated thinking this would help) I cannot edit and update my entries and keep being hounded about getting an account at a monthly rate. I want to keep my standalone and just use it. The instructions to be able to do that with the newer versions is confusing and misleading (makes references to buttons that do not exists etc.). How do I get the app to work again? Am I being forced to buy a monthly account?
