Also interested in this but couldn't find answers yet. Do I need to sign up for families, migrate my data, then cancel my individual membership?

You can find pricing details here - https://1password.com/families/

Do you currently have a membership? If so, you can upgrade from an Individual account to a Family account from within your existing account. Based upon your question, it sounds like you may have a standalone vault set up syncing through Dropbox or iCloud, possibly even non-syncing.

If the latter is correct, you would signup and migrate your data.

If it's the former and you need to change the account type, this should help answer any questions - https://support.1password.com/change-account-type/

Thanks, that worked fine. Didn't know I could just add people to my current account. Thanks!

Thanks! Followup question (apologies if it's been addressed I couldn't find it) I have a Mac with two user accounts. My 1password runs on my account but I want to share one vault with my son's account. I can't use the generated 1pif file for this as 1password wants an opvault file. I have tried to find this but can't. Any help is appreciated.

    Perfect setup! :)

Super, sounds like you know what you need.

Exactly, 1Password, is looking for the sync file. The 1PIF file is not designed for that purpose.

The easiest way to accomplish what you're seeking to do is likely through a membership. It eliminates the need for the .opvault format and needing to setup a 3rd party syncing service such as Dropbox. You can find out more information here - https://support.1password.com/explore/get-started/

If you have one setup, you would invite your son to the account. https://support.1password.com/family-sharing/

I think i understand but when I go to my son's Mac user area he needs to run 1password in "virgin" form which means there are no files. I don't currently have a way to get the vault to him? (see picture)

  • If you have a Family Membership and you're syncing through 1Password.com, you would send him an invite to create an Account of his own, under your Family account. Once he accepts and creates his personal account, he will have a Master Password and Secret Key, of his own. Then, he would select the option of 1Password.com in your screenshot.

If you don't have a membership syncing through 1Password.com you would need to either upgrade to one, or choose one of the other sync solutions.
