Why do I have difficulties getting "typographical emphasis" in my posts?

It is always hit and miss whether I can get B or I to be applied to text in my posts. Any idea why this is so?

Hi @jmjm

How are you trying to apply these features? Bold can be applied by surrounding the text with ** (i.e. on either side of the text): **Bold**. For italics it is _, so: italics is written as _italics_.

I get that. But 50% of the time I see ** this ** rather than this and _ this _ rather than this in Preview.

If you have whitespace between the markdown and the characters you want formatted that would do it.

_ this_ is not the same as _this_

No I realize about the white space. I had to put it in on purpose because B and I were "working" just fine for that post. But often I just get text with the markdowns on either side in the preview
