The 1Password X browser extension can serve as your primary interface to 1Password. With it, you do not need 1Password for Mac. However, many folks like the experience of having a native desktop application to interact with. You can certainly try both, as both are included with your membership, and keep either or both. :) You'll almost certainly want a browser extension as that is how 1Password will be able to fill your credentials into websites. 1Password for Mac cannot do that on its own, without an extension.
