Inconsistent behaviour with unlock with Apple Watch and multiple Macs

I have two Macs, an iMac 2020 with 10.15.7 and a MacBook Pro 15" 2016 with 11.0.1. Both meet the minimum requirements for unlock with Apple Watch - the iMac has the T2 chip and the MacBook has a T1. My Apple Watch is a Series 5 and its version is 7.1.

Unlock with Apple Watch stops working when I shutdown one machine and move to the other. If I stay on one machine, it continues to work even if I shutdown or or restart. But if I shutdown and switch to the other machine, it stops working (I don't see the unlock with Apple Watch prompt) and it continues to not work across shutdown and reboots. The only way to get it working again is to disable and enable the "unlock using Apple watch" in preferences.

Another strange thing, and probably related, is that unlock with Touch ID stops working as well on my MacBook after starting it up. I have to enter my master password even though I have it set to 2 weeks.

What I've tried without success:

  • Disable "unlock with Apple watch", restart, and enable it on both machines. This works until I shutdown and move to the other machine.
  • Running the 1Password troubleshooting app and repairing permissions, file attributes, and resetting launch services

I'm seeing similar issues...not frequently...and typically I have got 1PW being unlocked with Apple Watch working by toggling "unlock with Apple watch" off then on. Have not needed to restart. I do use this on 2 Macs as well, but have not seen what @janlee has reported. One difference...I rarely shut either Mac off.

Same issue for me, unlock 1Password with Apple Watch worked for a day or two and then stopped working on both my iMac Pro and MBP. Unlock of 1Password with Touch ID also no longer works

I have a version of this problem, happens so reliably that unlock with watch is unusable. My configuration is similar to janlee's: two Macs, one (Mac Mini 2018) running 11.0.1 and one (Macbook Pro 2017 touchbar) running 10.15.7. I switch between the two computers frequently, but I rarely reboot either. Series 5 watch running 7.1.

On both computers, I can check the "Unlock using Apple Watch" option in the preferences and it will work right away. I can lock the app from the menu and unlock it with my watch as many times in a row as I want to. But if I go away for a while, next time I need to unlock the app it won't show the button or prompt for unlocking with my watch, just the master password. The option remains checked in the preferences menu though. If I turn the option off and then on again, the whole sequence repeats.

I think it did work better than that for me for the first day or so after I first enabled unlock with watch.

Support not available to chime in here??

  • Hey folks,

Development is looking into your reports. I'm afraid I do not have anything to share at the moment. You would see any improvements in our betas first. If anyone wants to join the beta, you can use these instructions to do that. The issue is still occurring in 1Password 7.7.1 beta 3. A new beta has not been released. If you are interested in following along with the beta release notes, you can find out more via our update server.

Updating to 7.7.1 beta 3 and restarting each machine has made this issue go away for me. Unlock with watch is working like I expect it's supposed to work.
Possibly related: on one machine I also use another software application that uses a per-host license registration, and that software lost track of its license across the restart.
