Safari extension won't unlock, demands I uninstall 1PW7 app to uninstall

Safari: Version 14.0.1 (16610.2.11.51.8)
macOS: 11.0.1
1PW: 7.7 from 1Password Store

To reproduce:
1. In Safari, Safari > Extensions...
2. Click "install" for 1PW extension
3. In Safari, go to any page with login/password fields
4. Click in Password field
5. Small dialog appears with button "Unlock 1Password"
6. Click button

Expected result

  • New dialog to type in master password for 1P

Actual result

  • Nothing happens: the small dialog doesn't go away

Notes:

  • Clicking the 1P icon in Safari toolbar also does nothing
  • Restarting Safari doesn't change behavior
  • Uninstalling 1PW extension is not an option, because when I try to do that, Safari says I need to uninstall the 1P app!??!!! Not gonna happen.
  • Also, Safari's own password dialog covers the 1P extension dialog. To make the Safari dialog go away, I need to click on the 1P dialog. A simple fix would be to make the 1P dialog bigger, so that its Unlock button appears underneath the Safari dialog, instead of being covered by it.

    Hi @rbondi!

    1. Click "install" for 1PW extension

For future reference: there is no need to install the Safari extension, it's included as soon as you install the 1Password app. You just need to activate it under Safari Preferences > Extensions tab.

What you are describing is a bug our developers are aware of. Can you please try quitting 1Password completely (right-click on 1Password mini in the menu bar at the top right of your screen > Quit 1Password Completely), and then relaunch 1Password? Are you able to unlock the inline menu now?

Same issue here. I'm on an M1 machine, on 11.0.1 with 1pw 7.7 that was migrated from my old machine.
the suggestion immediately above was a new order of operations but made no difference.

I'm going to try a removal of 1pw entirely but expect no change. will report back...

    Hi ag_ana,

I don't know what you mean by "unlock the inline menu": What inline menu?

    Here is what I did:

    1. Quit Safari
    2. Completely quit 1P
    3. Launched 1P & unlocked it
    4. Launched Safari
    5. Right-clicked 1P extension -> Manage extensions
    6. Clicked Uninstall

    Expected result:

    • I'm able to uninstall the extension

    Actual result:

    • Same as before: says I have to uninstall 1P first. I'm not doing that, that's ridiculous.

I can uncheck the extension, but then it disappears from Safari's toolbar, and I can't use 1P anymore with Safari.

This inline menu, the one that appears when you click on an email or password field:

Reinstalling 1pw fixed this for me. I had the exact same issue, and this fixed it for me:

    • fully quit 1pw from the menu item
    • delete 1pw from /Applications
    • quit Safari
    • reinstall from downloaded 1Password-7.7.pkg

I didn't clear anything from my user directory, so no preferences were lost. After launch, it prompted me to unlock the vault it had previously been configured to automatically open. No muss, no fuss, no stress.

Reinstalling an application that isn't working isn't ridiculous. It's troubleshooting. And it's not the least bit difficult.

Indeed: the 1Password data folder is stored separately from the app, so removing the app will not touch your data or configuration settings :+1:

    Hi ag_ana,

Thanks, yes the inline menu is working now!

Apologies for my not understanding what was going on with the extension. I thought I had to remove one I installed from the extension store, in order to use the one that 1P installs. I realize now that I am already using the one 1P installs, and that’s why I can’t remove it without uninstalling 1P.

Have a great day and thanks again, |r:b:

Same problem here. I can't quit 1Password mini because I can't right-click on 1Password mini in the menu bar at the top right of my screen -- I have an Apple Magicmouse with one button and cannot right-click. When I CNTRL-click I only get the option to "Manage Extension" rather than quitting. Which means I can't uninstall 1Password and reinstall. Any other workarounds?

It sounds like you are control clicking on the 1Password extension in the browser. Try doing the same on the menu bar icon.
