Let us easily add a website to an existing 1P login

Modern web apps change URLs constantly. e.g. one URL for account creation, another for accessing your account, and yet another for god knows what.

Can we PLEASE have a feature that says "Add alternate website..."

What it does is this: say you create an account at foo.com some time ago. Later, you come back to find that you're on Foo's site, but because the URL changed it seems there's no login saved. This happened while trying to sign into 1Password Support Community to post! I had an old agilebits URL instead of this fancy new 1password.community URL.

The current way to let 1P know of this new website is to copy the URL, open 1P, find the login you want, click edit, wait for a new tab to open, then add the website to a new Website field there, and finally, save it.

This works, but is cumbersome. And as time goes on, you'll only find more of this mess. Modern websites use so many third party services--e.g. if you're on the support site or making a payment, that may well take you to foo.force.com (Salesforce!) It's happening a lot more frequently.

We need a button that says "Add this website..." and then 1P simply asks you to search for the account login you want to add the site to. Simple.

Can it be done?

    Hey Michael.

Anything can be done, the question is - should it be done?
The reason 1Password is so strict when it comes to the website's domain is due to phishing attempts. Our main method of protecting you from a phishing attempt is by not letting you autofill on a website that has no login item associated with it. For example, if you go to a website called azamon.com, we will not suggest your Amazon login on it, even if the website looks identical to Amazon's.

As for websites who change their login page's URL - that is not quite common enough to justify a feature that might hurt users who are not as tech savvy as you (and will add malicious URLs to their existing logins by mistake). While we did change the URL of our forum, this definitely doesn't happen often, and usually doesn't happen at all with the vast majority of websites. Most websites might change the prefix/suffix of their URL (e.g. facebook.com/login), but will not change their base domain, so 1Password should still identify and suggest proper logins on the website even if the prefix/suffix has changed.

So here are the edge cases we are left with (and their solutions):

    • When a website changes its base domain, you can either manually edit the login item and replace the URL, or you can simply save a new login on that website's login page.
    • When a website sends you to another different domain just to log in, you'll save your login on that specific login page, so it doesn't matter if the actual website is on a different domain, you will still reach the login page and 1Password will suggest the correct login. If a website you already know has suddenly decided to send you to a different domain, then adding that 2nd domain as another website field in the login item is the right way to go.

We do constantly monitor situations like these and we don't see this specific case becoming very common anytime soon, but we'll keep assessing as time progresses. Thanks for bringing this up!
Let me know if you have further questions on the matter.
