Suggestion to improve mass copying items from local vault to 1Password.com account

As Sidekick is not a whitelisted browser, I've decided to bite the bullet and finally try the 1Password X service so I can use the 1Password extension in Sidekick.

However, in order for this to work, I needed to copy my existing items into my 1Password.com vault. I went ahead and did this, without thinking that hard about it, imagining that I was just creating a remote copy of my local data.

However, when I went to look something up on my phone in the 1Password app today, to my horror I realized that all of my local items had been synced to the trash! (I hadn't signed in to my 1Password X account on my phone yet).

Fortunately, when I got back to my laptop, I was able to drag all the trashed items back to my local vault so no harm done... BUT — it really seems to me (unless my mental model is broken) that the default action of dragging from a local vault to a remote 1Password X account should be to COPY rather than move and trash.

I was certainly surprised by this, and can't imagine I'm alone.

    Hi @Chris Messina!

    When it comes to moving items from one vault to another, there is not default method: you can choose whether to move or copy beforehand:

    Not when you drag and drop though.

    @Chris Messina:

    Ah I see what you mean now, thank you! I think drag and drop is an action that always moves items instead of copying them. At least, I cannot think of any example where it duplicates data off the top of my head (moving files from one place to another on the computer, for example).

    If I were to drag and drop items from one vault to another in 1Password, I think the expectation would be that those items moved there. If they were duplicated, I think it would feel strange. But we can certainly keep this discussion open and see if we get any more feedback about this, perhaps it's just me :)

    There are cases where dragging and dropping copies by default instead of moves like when you're dragging an item from read-only removable media, for example:

    In this case, I was surprised because when I next opened 1Password on my phone and hadn't signed into my 1Password account, it appeared that all of my items were gone (indeed, because they had been trashed and then synced!).

    I also was unable to sign in to my 1Password account because the 1Password item had also been put in the trash!

    So my main point is: when copying from a local vault to a 1Password.com connected vault, the default should be to copy rather than move.
