Below is the business end of the 30-day gun just pointed in my direction. The extension formerly known as 1Password X in Chrome on Big Sur has a tough-looking 20-some character candidate all teed up to replace my current 8-character softie. Can I use it? How? Thanks in advance for any and all guidance.

"Your new password will need to follow these requirements:

Be a minimum of 8 characters
Be a maximum of 15 characters

    @williakz:

Absolutely, you can use any password created by the 1Password generator, and customize it to follow the website's requirements.

If you have any more specific questions, or are getting stuck somewhere along the process and need help updating a password with 1Password, please let us know :+1:

@ag_ana, I have a specific question, am getting stuck somewhere along the process and need help.

There is a mismatch between the new password 1Password is proposing (greater than 15 characters) and the one my site requires (no more than 15 characters). I'm concerned that if I allow 1Password to supply its too-long password, I won't know how the site will deal with it. It could reject it outright in which case I'm stuck before I start. Worse, it could truncate it to 15 characters or mangle it in some other way, in which case 1Password and the site would have different passwords for the login. I would know only that the 1Password password is incorrect and would have to guess at the newly active password on the site. This is NOT a situation I ever expected to face using 1Password and definitely not one I wish to experiment with.

Specific Question: How do I get 1Password to come up with a "hard" password of acceptable length while avoiding the password "guessing game" and still manage to do so prior to the deadline?

Step-by-step customization instructions—using either 1Password desktop (latest stable) or 1Password from within Chrome (latest stable extension, latest Chrome) on Big Sur Mac—will be fine.

You can find the instructions on how to create a custom password in the browser here:

@ag_ana, the password created using your suggestion is too long relative to the site limit of 15 characters. Please go back and reread my messages to see just what I'm asking for so you can address it more completely and effectively than sending me to a few words that are non-responsive to my issue.

To reiterate: How do I integrate the site's "Change password" dialog (standard format with Old/New/Confirm fields) with 1Password's generator function to produce the "smartest" NEW password of limited (15 char) length? I think I recall reading in other threads that this was doable in the normal course of website password changing without having to resort to pencil and paper (or at least cutting, editing, and pasting). However, I also remember that the Password Generator has recently been modified so I don't know exactly what in those threads is still relevant. Perhaps you might look up one of those threads, apply your knowledge of the present capabilities of the generator, and distill the correct procedure for me. I'm sure other 1Password users would benefit from your efforts as well.

I seldom generate passwords in 1Password (X). I do most of my password generating through the Mac app. Old habits die hard. That said, I'll try to give it a go in helping you. :)

    1. Open 1Password in the browser by clicking the extension button
    2. Click the "+" at the top of the box inside the search box.
    3. Click Password Generator,
    4. Change the type from smart password to random password.
    5. Use the slider to adjust the number of characters.
    6. When satisfied, click Autofill.

You da man! Thanks, @ag_tommy, worked like a charm. I'll try the next one using the desktop app, just for old time(r)'s sake...

  • You're welcome. Glad to help.
