Show local vault in browser extension

Options

I reinstalled the browser extension in the Google Chrome browser on my new iMac. It seems to be a new version and it only show the vaults in the 1Password cloud and does not show the local vault on my iMac. Is there a sulotion for this?

Hi @MNeeleman! Welcome to the forum!

If you want to see standalone vaults in the browser extension as before, you can download the previous version from here:

    Get the 1Password classic extension

I just ran into this as well and it took me a while to get to this post. This drastic and hidden change to local vault support smells a lot like back when there was this discussion of local vaults in the app (that was unpleasant).

How long will the 1Password Classic Extension be supported? Will I need to jump through these hurdles every time I update the 1Password app? I'm really concerned about how non-obvious this change was, and what it means for local vault support moving forward.

While this version of 1Password is still supported, it is no longer receiving development updates.

Standalone vaults will also not be part of the next major release of 1Password. You can read Dave's statement on that in his recent post: https://1password.community/discussion/comment/601917/#Comment_601917

I just ran into this issue too. Finding this news that standalone vaults have been deprecated is unfortunate.

I would prefer to keep using standalone vaults and not have my vault stored in the cloud. I am happy to pay a subscription for the 1password software, but the requirement that my vault be stored in the cloud may be a dealbreaker for me.

I understand you take security seriously. I trust your software with my passwords. However, I see your cloud vault storage as a treasure-trove for hackers. It is a large, enticing target. And while there are currently no known flaws in the encryption of the vaults--and I do understand that the vault contents are not only stored, at rest, encrypted in your service, but also transited to the service encrypted--that is now. So, if the vault storage is hacked, and the vaults are exfiltrated, and then at any time in the future there is a flaw found in the encryption, my entire vault is exposed.

I find that to be very uncomfortable.

  • Thank you for the feedback dtomack.

I back dtomack comments above, for me it will be a deal breaker, I purchased 1password mainly thanks to this standalone vault as I refuse to have my vault in the cloud outside of my control.

  • Thanks for chiming in @AcDc. We can certainly appreciate your desire to keep things local. If we made self-hosting of 1Password.com available, would you use it? And how would you prefer to do so? Before we invest in making a standalone 1Password service a reality we want to gauge demand for this feature. If this is something you need, we would appreciate it if you could participate in this survey to help use better understand your use case.

I found this discussion because I, too, stopped seeing any of my logins in the updated browser extension, and realized that it was not permitting me to use my local vault. Installing the "classic" extension got things working—for now. Also wondering how long this arrangement would continue to work, I read on. Then I saw this:

Standalone vaults will also not be part of the next major release of 1Password.

This is, unfortunately, a deal-breaking development for me. My job includes working with DoD partners, and I am strictly prohibited from storing passwords remotely. I'm permitted to use a password manager like 1Password, but passwords must be stored locally and can be backed up only to non-cloud backups. I've been a loyal 1Password user/customer since the very first public release, but I've been more and more turned off by the forceful "nudges" to using your cloud password service, and this news seals the deal. I'll be looking for a new password manager, unless 1Password backs off on this terrible decision.

I signed up for this community just so that I could reply to this post, and also ask: Can you please tell me where I can request a refund for my subscription? It renewed just last month for 1 year, and I'm owed a refund if you're getting rid of standalone vaults.

    Hey @nwilliams_zaxiom ,
Thanks for chiming in and sharing your thoughts.

As already mentioned here, you can read Dave Teare's (our founder) announcement and explanation on that decision here: https://1password.community/discussion/comment/601917/#Comment_601917

You can also fill out the survey in that announcement for a locally self-hosted setup which might be the middle-ground for what you want/need.

In addition, I'd like to point out that you can keep using 1Password 7 and the 1Password classic extension for as long as you'd like - it will keep working normally and you won't be forced to update/upgrade by us.
In case you'd still like to cancel you account, you can email us to support@1password.com and our billing team will get back to you and help you with this.

I really hate to say this after so many years loving 1Password, but these recent version bumps (after 1P6) have been a bit of a mess... It's making the software no longer a transparent pleasure to use... All the "Classic" extension, remote vaults, horrific new syncing flows, local vaults are no longer well-supported, etc. It all used to work so beautifully and elegantly, and I now I find myself cringing regularly with 1P7...

Dunno, hope this isn't all starting to collapse under too many features/too much "growth"...

I installed the "Classic" extension so I could continue with my local vault, but now I have a 3+ second delay after clicking the Chrome extension button before the extension flyout window pops up. This all just works so poorly.

@ag_yaron, your statement of "it will keep working normally and you won't be forced to update/upgrade by us" simply isn't the case... it's almost unusably degraded performance.

Clicking this button is sooo sluggish:

Classic password extension stopped working. It says that I need to install desktop app. Which I have. Newer extension for cloud passwords works. But my personal vault is standalone. And it is not possible to use 1password in the browser...

  • @passwordlover

Do you have a standalone and a cloud vault? If so, we highly recommend moving all of your data to your membership (Personal/Private vault) and then removing the standalone. That should get you going with the newer 1Password in the browser.

@ag_tommy cloud version is for business. It's the one I am using for work. I was not planning to buy a cloud version of 1password, as I have purchased a standalone version in the past. So this should be still working.
I have separate profile in chrome. So in "work" tab (with company profile) I have recent version of the extension and there 1password cloud is working correctly. But for "home" tab (personal profile) I have installed the classic extension. And it stopped working. It doesn't discover the 1password app on my Mac.

  • 1Password 8 is on the horizon. We have some incredible deals for those looking to complete the transition to membership. Membership is the way forward with 1Password. It will be the only option supported in 1Password 8.

Are you using version 6? If so, please see this help topic. 1Password 6 for Mac won't fill or save in Chrome 99.0.4844.74 or later

I am using 1password 7. It was always working. It stopped working recently.

So basically, 1password decided to force standalone version users to convert to paid plan? I really don't like the way you are doing it. No announcement that standalone will not be working (no deadline). But it just broke and it's gone. That's really bad approach...

You might want to reach out to one of the extensions specialists. Seems you have run through all the typical questions and nothing fit your specific issue. One of my colleagues may be able to help further troubleshoot this for you. Ok, so I just found this thread after searching for a solution to this (thinking it was a bug).

With this feature going away, I would like to know how I am to use 1password in the following scenario:

I use 1password on my work computer since I occasionally need to login to private stuff. I also have a lot of work stuff that have passwords that I need to manage. Work passwords are not allowed to be saved on any cloud platform, no matter how secure they say they are.

How do I continue to conveniently, in my browser, login to both work stuff and private stuff?

  • Hi @Kossling:

In your case, using the 1Password classic extension would be best. Get the 1Password classic extension

1Password 8 doesn't support standalone vaults, and as Tommy mentioned above, membership is the way forward.

    Jack
