Need to reboot M1 Mac after every 1password update to get safari plugin to work again

I'm wondering if this is being experienced by anyone else. Every time 1password updates the safari extension stops working until I reboot the computer. I've tried restarting 1password and safari but it doesn't help.

Any suggestions? It's very frustrating.

1Password Version: 7.8.3
Extension Version: 7.8.3
OS Version: 11.3.1

  • Hey @Semisential. When 1Password for Mac updates, Safari has to load the new extension as well (the extension is a part of the app itself); sometimes this doesn't take right away, especially if Safari was open at the time of the 1Password update. If you encounter this again, can you try turning the extension off and back on (uncheck the box next to the extension, and re-check it) under Safari > Preferences > Extensions, and see if reloading the extension that way fixes the connection to the 1Password app?

Thanks @ag_michaelc . I'll give that a shot next update and see how I go. PS.. Congrats on a fantastic app. Couldn't live without it.

  • Thank you for the kind words, @Semisential! We're here to help further if needed.

@ag_michaelc I've been consistently having this problem as well the past few weeks, but on Intel not M1. Re-enabling the extension and restarting Safari didn't help. Is there something else I can try resetting other than the whole machine?

We very recently fixed this issue on our end. You should get the fix in the next update.

For now, you can try to close all of our components to reset the connection state:

    • close 1Password
    • close Safari
    • unregister our BrowserHelper component: open Terminal.app and type in launchctl remove 2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password.browser-helper
    • open 1Password
    • open Safari

Thanks @ag_Maciej! These steps didn't work for me (also checked ps and killed a leftover 1password pid), but I'll look out for the next version with the fix

    Sounds good @dap .

If you'd like, you can also send us a diagnostics report from your Mac and we can probably get things to work for you after a bit of troubleshooting via email.

I find this really frustrating. Which version will have this fix? I currently have:
    1Password 7
    Version 7.8.5 (70805000)
    Mac App Store

    Hey @jgoodnoe ,

Currently there is no direct fix. The workaround is to restart 1Password and Safari like so:

    1. Right click the little 1Password icon on the top menu bar of your Mac (where the clock is) and select "Quit 1Password Completely".
    2. Quit Safari by right clicking its icon in the Dock and selecting "Quit".
    3. Open and unlock 1Password.
    4. Open Safari and test if it is working properly.

These steps should get everything working. If things still don't work in Safari, send us a diagnostics report so we can investigate the issue further.

The steps from @ag_yaron appear to have fixed it. Thanks. That's much better than having to restart my computer. Restarting is often not an option for me. Fingers crossed that the next update doesn't require doing this again.

We hope so too @jgoodnoe !
But if you encounter the issue again, a quick restart to 1Password (and possibly Safari as well) should get things going in a jiffy. :chuffed:
