Help! 1PW in Chrome is UNlocking by itself

Over the past few days I've noticed 1PW not locking after several minutes as it should. Worse, when I open Chrome, it goes from locked to unlocked in seconds by itself. Scary! Firefox on same PC is behaving nicely.

I've rebooted. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the extension.

Any ideas?

    Hey @litbynumbers 👋

We recently released a feature we call Shared Lock State, which allows 1Password in your browser to communicate with the 1Password desktop app. It sounds like the desktop app is remaining unlocked after you close your browser, and 1Password in the browser is adopting the lock state of the desktop app. Could you open 1Password for Windows and see if it's unlocked?

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Kaitlyn, and thanks for replying.

I found that the desktop app was running in background processes. I ended the task, closed chrome, and then reopened Chrome, and it stayed locked. When I unlocked the extension, 1Password desktop app opened again in background processes. I logged in and locked it. While it said "your vault is locked," I opened Chrome and it unlocked itself.

NOTE: I'm admittedly confused about how the desktop app works with the browser, and I'm noting that my password for the desktop app is different from the extension password ... if that makes any difference.

Is there a way to turn off that new feature?

@litbynumbers – It is possible to have two different passwords to unlock the 1Password desktop app vs. 1Password in your browser if you have a standalone vault in the 1Password desktop app. The standalone vault's password would take precedence over your account's Master Password in the desktop app. However, standalone vaults aren't supported in 1Password in your browser, so that one would require your account's Master Password to unlock. Like I mentioned, since 1Password in the browser now shares the lock state of the 1Password desktop app, it's only required that you unlock the desktop app to unlock 1Password in your browser. I hope that makes sense, but let me know if you have any questions.

You can absolutely disable the Shared Lock State feature. Here's how:

    1. Right click the 1Password extension icon in the top right corner of your browser toolbar and select "Settings".
    2. Disable the "Integrate with 1Password app" option.
