Question about 1Password X / 1Password Classic extension, Mac and Microsoft Edge.
I was a huge fan of 1Password Classic extension because I can use the same keyboard shortcut as the one on macOS ⌘ + \ to fill passwords. On the current 1Password extension (1Password X), I am unable to change the fill passwords shortcut to ⌘ + \. I eventually changed my mind because the new extension did a better job saving generated passwords correctly when I register a website, which can let me use generated passwords more with confidence.
But still, I have a couple of questions/issues:
- When I install 1Password X on Google Chrome, it will connect to my desktop app nicely, without the need to type the credentials, but then when I use ⌘ + \ on the browser, nothing happens, so is this intentional?
- Is there a way I can use the same shortcut with 1Password X? I don't want to use ⌘ + \ on Mac App, then ⌘ + ⇧ + X on the browser.
- The integration between the 1Password desktop (Mac) app and Edge browser extension SUCKS! Regardless of 1Password Classic or the 1Password X. Both of them can't connect to desktop app seamlessly: on Classic extension it just doesn't work (sometimes it works with luck and these workarounds 🤞), on 1Password X, I need to sign manually, and when I press ⌘ + \ on browser, the native mini app pops up and says "Add 1Password to Microsoft Edge Dev". I can convince myself to switch back to Google Chrome, but I think the UX on Microsoft Edge definitely needs to improve (maybe only on Dev / Beta / Canary Channel?).
Also, 1Password Classic extension release notes haven't been updated since 2019: https://app-updates.agilebits.com/product_history/OPX4
1Password Version: 7.8.6
Extension Version: 2.0.5
OS Version: macOS 11.4
Sync Type: 1Password.com

I found this link after I post, maybe... we should blame Microsoft instead 😂?

The new version of 1Password for your browser uses shortcuts very differently. You can read more about the changes in my post here.
As for native messaging between 1Password and beta versions of browsers, you'll want to make sure the proper native messaging host folders exist for any beta versions you have installed:
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder. Copy and paste the following path and press Return:
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/NativeMessagingHosts/
- Copy the file named
com.1password.1password7.json
to your desktop. - Choose Go > Go to Folder. Copy and paste the correct path for your browser and press Return:
- Microsoft Edge Beta: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge Beta/
- Microsoft Edge Dev: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge Dev/
- Microsoft Edge Canary: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge Canary/
- Open the folder
NativeMessagingHosts
or create it if it doesn’t exist. - Drag the file named
com.1password.1password7.json
from your desktop into the NativeMessagingHosts folder. - Restart your browser.
Let me know if you have any questions - I'll be happy to help.

Hi @ag_chantelle ,
Thank you for your reply, I just read the post you mentioned in your answer, although I am okay with it, but clearly, I believe it's not the ideal solution:
The new version of 1Password for your browser will still support
⌘ + \
, however it is limited to autofilling credentials only if you have a single Login item saved for the site you are on.- I can use
⌘ + \
on my mac to launch the mini-app at any time, but I have to use another key combination for the browser. - Now, I need to think about do I have more than one login item on one site. If it does have two login items, nothing will happen when I try to use
⌘ + \
to fill the passwords. - I don't think
⌘ + ⇧ + X
is ideal as the default shortcut for 1Password X, this shortcut is used to create screenshots on Microsoft Edge for Mac, so this shortcut will not be used for auto-fill by default.
I will switch to Chrome and keep using
⌘ + ⇧ + X
, but this inconsistency really needs to be resolved in 1Password 8 for Mac. Any spoilers ;)Also, I would like to continue the conversation about native messaging between 1Password and beta versions of browsers in email later, it seems like doesn't work for me.

I agree, we can definitely do better with aligning our keyboard shortcuts for the new version of 1Password for your browser. I'll pass your feedback along to the team. In the meantime, you're certainly not limited to
SHIFT+⌘+X
if that shortcut is already reserved for another function on your Mac. If you'd like to change it to something else, you'll be able to do so from the Extensions page of your browser.Regarding native messaging, I agree - we'll want to get a diagnostics report from your Mac so that we can further investigate. If you can send it to us at support+x@1password.com, one of our team members will be able to help you get things sorted there.

Hi @ag_chantelle ,
I will definitely send diagnostics report, along with the screen recording in email to help y'all diagnose the issue. Also, I am aware that I can change to another shortcut, but I still believe that's might not be a good default setting considering every MS Edge user might need to change the setting manually.

Thanks @craigary! We look forward to getting to the bottom of things for you. And duly noted on the feedback regarding MS Edge. I'll be sure to share your sentiments with our development team.
