Annoyed at number of interactions required to autofill

So in my experience so far with 1Password 8, it takes many more interactions to autofill when your vault is locked:

1Password 7:
Hit command-slash
Touch ID prompt appears automatically, just touch finger to Touch ID to unlock
Password autofills automatically
(2 interactions)

1Password 8:
Hit command-slash
1Password window pops up to enter password, you have to click a button to enable Touch ID, then touch the sensor
The browser extension doesn't automatically detect that 1P is unlocked so you have to click the extension, then click "Open 1Password." It takes a few seconds, then unlocks.
Now that it's unlocked, you can hit command-slash again to autofill
(6 interactions)

Found your feedback based on searching for a smoother way to utilize Touch ID, I'm wondering if you had to change settings to get Touch ID to trigger an automatic autofill on 1Password 7? I'm getting a similar experience on 7 as you describe on 8 (Hit command-slash, system prompts Touch ID to unlock, then have to hit command-slash again to trigger autofill).

  • Hi folks, from my testing recently it looks like this has been significantly improved in 1Password 8. But if anyone is seeing any clunkiness in the 1Password 8 / Touch ID integration, let me know and I'll be happy to investigate further, offer a fix, or report any areas of improvement to our development team. 👍

This has actually gotten worse for me recently. I thought it used to work like this:

    1. On login screen, hit shortcut
    2. 1Password window pops up; enter passsword
    3. Browser extension sometimes unlocks
    4. Hit enter to fill suggested login item

But now, before step 4, I find that somehow focus is not given to the browser extension, so that hitting enter does not have any effect. This is despite it appearing to be at the front of the window, and Safari appearing to be the active application. What I have to do is CMD-Tab twice, to leave and return to Safari. At that point, hitting enter will fill the suggested login item.

Any idea what is happening? It is recent behavior -- last week or so. I'm using v 2.3.0 of the safari browser extension, and v 8.6.0 of 1Password for Mac.

@PeterG_1P Adding to this thread. I have a very similar experience as the OP. The caveat being the issue only happens when I use my Mac in "clam shell" mode. Due to my desk configuration my computer is not within reach. I have to manually enter the password to unlock the vault via extension. Just like the OP after I type in my password the extension does not update. I have to click "open 1password" again for the extension to show my available passwords. This does not happen if I use it with TouchID as normal.

@PeterG_1P thanks for the responses, does your comment mean that us 1Password 7 users are out of luck as far as any way to have Touch ID not force the user to hit the shortcut a second time (after the initial trigger)? Or am I missing a setting that would allow this.

And on some page: reload and try to select the login again… I have quite a few pages that require a reload after you've unlocked 1Password. :-\

  • Thank you folks for this feedback!

@VividLamp - my understanding is this is technically a different issue, and one our developers are aware of. I'll double-check on the specifics of this though.

I'll do some additional testing on this and should be replying to this thread again shortly. Thanks for your patience, folks!

  • Hey @thewellington:

That definitely doesn't sound like the experience we want you to have. Just to confirm, do you have either 1Password for Safari if you're using Safari, or 1Password in the browser if you're using one of our other supported browsers?

With 1Password in your browser, pressing ⌘ + \ should show the dropdown on the login field of the website you're on. Let me know, and I can dig in further with you!

I'm sorry it isn't working as expected. It doesn't sound like 1Password 8 is communicating with the browser extension in your case. To get us started troubleshooting that, please check on Jack's question above:

Just to confirm, do you have either 1Password for Safari if you're using Safari, or 1Password in the browser if you're using one of our other supported browsers?

Once you've confirmed you've got the correct browser extension installed and enabled, please right click on the extension icon in your browser's toolbar, and select settings. In the extension settings turn on the 'integrate with 1Password app' setting if it is not on. Then, in the 1Password 8 app, open 1Password > Preferences > Browser and enable the 'connect with 1Password in the browser.' If you're still having trouble after enabling those settings, we'd need to take a look at the logs to see why the two aren't talking.

To generate a diagnostic report from 1Password 8, select 1Password > Preferences > Advanced > Send Diagnostics. We'll also want to see the log from the extension side. Instructions for gathering that can be found here:

Save a console log for 1Password in your browser

Attach both the diagnostic report and console log to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

  • Hi @thewellington

I appreciate the detailed explanation regarding your experience.

I can be available for a zoom call, where I can demonstrate my experience with 1 password 7 and 1 password 8. Let me know if you are interested in that, and provide me with some direct contact info so that I can send you a zoom link.

I have reached out to our user experience research group to see if this is something they can facilitate.

with 1 Password 7 I press command-\, select the correct set of credentials from those that are offered, select "autofill" and bam! creds are populated and I hit enter to log in.

This is what happens for me with 1Password 8 as well. I believe a lot of your pain can be resolved with some troubleshooting by our technical support team. If you're up for that, please see this post for the details on facilitating that. It sounds to me like the communication between the desktop app and the browser extension is not happening as expected, and that is why you're having a degraded experience. We'd like to get that sorted for you.

and ended up with these 1password logos all over my web pages when trying to log into stuff.

They're intended to be there to help, particularly for customers who prefer to interact with their computer with a mouse. If you'd prefer to turn that off, we can walk you through that. There is a level of granularity with that as well. For example, you can set it such that the inline menu doesn't open automatically, but it still available with a click, or you can disable it entirely. Those settings are available by right clicking on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar, selecting settings, and then review the options in the "autofill" section:

@PeterG_1P I'm getting the same issue as the original OP again since the 8.7.0 update, after previously having the issue resolved upon upgrading to the 1Password 8 beta. Whereas previously the trigger would open the login/password card after successfully authenticating with Touch ID, now the sequence is: Trigger>Touch ID>Trigger (again)>Fill. Any insight on this regression?

I'm seeing different behavior depending on if 1Password is locked or not when you hit Cmd+\

Unlocked: Cmd+\, Autofill or Suggestions work as expected.
Locked: Cmd+\, 1Password prompts for password, Quick Access opens, but there are no suggestions or autofill choices.
