Now I have to unlock 2 accounts every time I open 1P

Hello, one behavior that has been changed since 1P 7 to 1P 8 is that accounts have to be unlocked individually.

So I no longer have to remember 1 master password, I have to remember 2 master passwords and use them every time my 1P locks out because of a time out or because my computer goes to sleep.

This may be more secure and I don't know what a better workaround is, but I think it lowers usability and puts up a barrier to using 1P that wasn't there before.

An extension of this problem is that the Chrome browser extension simply doesn't show passwords from an account that is provisioned but locked, so one may be led to believe that they don't have a password for a website that is in a locked vault.

I'd encourage revisiting the UX of unlocking for users with multiple accounts.

Hi @samaparicio, thank you for this thoughtful feedback.

To start with an overview: you're right - this is a new approach to unlocking in 1Password 8, and it was implemented for security reasons which Jeffrey Goldberg, one of our resident security gurus, explains here: https://1password.community/discussion/comment/608291/#Comment_608291

(I hope you'll find that a fascinating examination of some of the issues involved, at the very least)

And your point here about the UX implications is one we appreciate. 👇

I'd encourage revisiting the UX of unlocking for users with multiple accounts.

I have filed a request to review how this might be done better or differently, and will add your comments from this thread to that discussion. Thank you for bringing this to us, and for the chance to make 1Password better yet!

I have a Personal Account and run 4 Business Accounts. I have to log into 5 separate accounts. After 10 minutes I then need to login to between 2-5 more accounts depending on what I'm juggling at the time. I want to gouge my eyes out.

From V3-7 entering one password to open all vaults worked fine with no problems. Please add a Preference with checkboxes beside each account that you would like opened with your first account. You can leave the Default the way you have it now if you're worried about noobs.

If you don't like that idea then at least an "App Master Password". I'm aware I can make all accounts the same password but I'm still entering that password one by one five times.

Users that have been fine for 10 years don't need the extra security step. We'll have to look for alternatives.

Programmed a Keyboard Maestro macro that I can live with. Keep the other account passwords in the first account then you can tell KM to copy paste into each account login screen.

  • Hey @11p:

We would strongly recommend against using macros or similar to copy and fill your account password. To clarify, 1Password 8 can unlock all accounts that share an account password. As an example:

    • Wendy's individual account, account password: ilovedogs
    • Wendy's family account, account password: ilovedogs
    • Wendy's account for her job, account password: ilovedogs12345

If Wendy opens and unlocks 1Password with her password ilovedogs, both her individual account and her family account will be unlocked. If Wendy wanted to unlock all of her accounts at the same time using a single password, adjusting the account passwords to be identical across all three accounts would be the best bet.

    Jack
