iPassword 8 and categories
Hi - Can someone please help me understand the functionality of the different items categories and the best practice for using them? Are they act simply as templates? the issue I am having is how to best organise items, for example "Reward Program" category makes sense to use for Airlines loyalty programs but sometimes I also want to login to the airline's website with my information, so do I need to keep a login item as well as the reward program item? wouldn't a single item that includes all the information is better for organisation? I have seen that items other than 'login' or identity' do not show in the 'suggested' login when using the browser extensions - can someone please help me understand what is the best way to organise?

Hi @Zinzun
In short, yes, categories are templates. They define the fields that will be available by default on the item you're creating. The other way in which they matter is for filling. 1Password can fill items in the Logins, Passwords, Credit Cards, Identities, and SSH categories. If you'd like to be able to fill information you're inputting into 1Password it would need to be saved in one of those categories. A Login category item will not have fields for rewards information by default, but additional fields can be added if you'd like to track that information alongside your credentials. Alternatively you could create two items, one in Logins and one in rewards, and then link those two items together.
A couple resources that may be helpful:
I think ideally, in the future, we'd be able to fill any item type as long as the item has the required information on it. We're not quite there yet. I hope that helps!

Hi @Ben
Thank you for the detailed explanation - exactly what I needed. It does makes sense that the long term strategy is moving towards “One item (type) fits all” (or filling all item types) provided the required fields do exists.
Considering the above, my personal organisational strategy would be to try and minimise / consolidate the number of related items to one, especially for once that also used for logins, in practical term - back to the Rewards example, I feel it is better to invest few more minutes and design my own reward template using the login category, and then simply duplicate when needed.
Thank you!
