Remove family member (ex wife) without her losing access to her passwords?

I would like to know how I can remove my ex wife from my family account without her losing her 1password functionality and passwords?

I feel stuck here, and from what I have read, it sounds like she'll lose access if I remove her. I don't want her to lose anything. What are the steps I can take, or that she can take, to make sure she doesn't lose her data. I don't want to be a dick and cut her off without her having opportunity to take SIMPLE steps to keep her account data.

I honestly find the account sharing/family sharing to be extremely UX.

Thank you.

  • Hi @mhulse:

Thanks for reaching out about this. As it currently stands, our best recommendation would be to have your ex-wife make a new 1Password account, and then add that new 1Password account to the 1Password app on one of her devices, then copy everything from her Private vault to her new 1Password account with you. This is definitely a situation we'd like to improve on in the future, and I'll share your feedback internally.

    Thanks for reply Jack.

Sooooo, while I am surprised at how cumbersome accounts and vaults work, I really need a step by step ...

    1. Create a new 1password account here: https://start.1password.com/sign-up/
    2. Add the new account to the app on her iPad or iPhone: https://support.1password.com/add-account/
    3. Copy/move all of her passwords from her private vault to her new account????

I think I am a little unclear on step number 3 above. If she creates a new account, and then adds it to her 1Password app on one of her devices, does that mean she needs to copy all of her passwords to the new private vault?

The goal here is to get her off of my family account and onto her own, separate, account.

Could someone provide (or link me to) clear, step-by-step, instructions?

    Thank you.

@mhulse Yes, that's correct. It needs to be done this way so that her items are re-encrypted with keys that she controls.

    1. First she needs to create her own 1Password account:

    https://1password.com/sign-up/

    1. Second she needs to add her new account to a 1Password app where she is logged into her old account:

    https://support.1password.com/multiple-accounts/

    1. Third she needs to move her items from her old Private vault to her new Private vault:

    https://support.1password.com/move-copy-items/

    1. When she has confirmed that she has all her items in her new Private vault, you can remove her from your 1Password family:

  • Hi @mhulse:

That's exactly correct. The steps @rootzero shared would be exactly the steps to take. First she would create her own 1Password membership, completely independent of yours, she'd then add the account to one of her devices, and copy the items from her Private vault into her new vault. Let me know how you both get on with that, or if you run into any trouble along the way.
