1Password 8 (beta) – Redesign edit button

What do you think if you will redesign the edit button to have macOS style when window buttons are on the left side instead of the right side. As an experienced macOS user, every time I reach the left side, I intuitively expect a button there, and then I drag the cursor to the right to click the button there. Very inconvenient, you will agree. And the same for other buttons, for example, "New Item".
And the left-side layout was in all previous versions of 1Password and has become a habit.

Huh. I'll complain all day when 1Password 8 doesn't "feel" like a macOS app. It's getting better and better at pretending to be one, and 1Password 8 is possibly the best Electron app on macOS, but Electron apps always feel like raccoons in a trench coat.

And I hate that New Item is blue (wtf?) and obviously a button, while Edit just looks like text (wtf?) until you mouse over it. That's a lame combination of things.

But! the placement of the Edit button doesn't bother me at all! It actually seems like a reasonable place to me. I don't think there's much of a standard for an Edit button.

Compare it to Contacts.app. The Edit button is in the bottom right, and the New Item button is insanely located at the bottom-left, inside the contact display area.

Paprika.app puts Edit in the top right, and it "feels" pretty good to me.

I can't think of any examples that put Edit where you're describing - can you share some?

In some cases, they place the edit button on the left side:

I meant that macOS has these 3 buttons on the left side comparing windows OS which has them on the right side:

And the main reason why they should be on the left, I suppose, is because in all previous versions of 1Password they were on the left.

About the blue color, yes it's really strange and I think it should be reconsidered towards the white and black style.

  • Hi @rostyslavm, thanks for this feedback.

To start, I'd like to make sure I'm correctly understanding the substance of your request.

@mia's observation here seems right to me:

I don't think there's much of a standard for an Edit button [vis-a-vis placement].

But I'm admittedly not a Mac developer, so there may be something I'm missing - let me know!

Regarding the stoplight buttons, those are located in the top-left corner in 1Password for Mac 8, as you mentioned. On Windows, the characteristic "minimize", "maximize" and "exit" options are right-aligned. In other words, both apps match the conventions of the relevant platform. If you think this should be done differently, or can specify how we could do better, let me know and I'll be happy to file a request on your behalf.

But as far as I know, these design choices are something that 1Password users have been asking for, and so far they seem to meet with general approval. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts!

@PeterG_1P Thank you very much for your reply, I really appreciate it!

In fact, everything looks very cool. But, I intuitively want to see these buttons (edit and add) on the left side of the main window, as it was done in versions < 8. Every time I catch myself that my cursor first moves to the left side, and then I remember, that in version 8 the button is now on the right. This is a trifle, a matter of time, I'll get used to it. But I decided to propose such changes, and if this is not done, no one will suffer :)

  • Sure thing, thank you for the suggestion @rostyslavm. We appreciate having your input on this!
