Password generator defaults and features

Hi there, I've recently switch to one password as my main password manager, I really appreciate the features and the cleanliness of 1password.

I'd love to see improvement in the password generator in a few ways:

  • I'd like to be able to set default generator settings for the suggested auto-fill password. I like the ability to set a default length and other complexity features.
  • On the password generator, I'd like more control over the generator, maybe in an advanced mode. Specifically more control over the characters that are used in the password, extended ASCII and specified include or exclude characters.

Right now I find myself making a password in KeePassXC but saving it in and using 1password, the advanced password generation features in that program are much better.

1Password Version: 8.7.0
Extension Version: 2.3.2
OS Version: Windows 11 Pro 21H2

  • Hey @CapableClatter, thanks for reaching out.

It sounds like you're referring to the password generator in 1Password in your browser. If that's the case, you can adjust the parameters on the fly:

    1. Click on the 1Password extension icon in your browser.
    2. Click on the Password Generator (Key Icon).
    3. Change the Type from Smart Password to Random Password.
    4. Adjust the password parameters to suit your needs.

If you'd prefer, you can set the Random Password as the default for suggestions.

As for more advanced options such as excluding characters, we currently have an internal feature request where I'll be sure to share your comment to see if this is something that can be implemented in a future version of 1Password. Thanks again for your feedback, it's greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much for you answer. I missed those generator setting that you pointed out and I very happy to see them there.
Thank you for informing me that my other request is something that you are already talking about. Very excited to see how much y'all are working and taking community feedback!

  • Thank you for this kind response, @CapableClatter. We're always happy to have that feedback! Thanks for being a part of the virtuous cycle. 😃

I would like to see the memorable password generator have more options. Currently in all interfaces (Android, Browser...) it doesn't have the same config but it would be nice to have it be able to meet more complex requirements. for instance password requirements that I have are that a password must have at least 1 CAPITAL LETTER, 1 lower case letter, 1 Special Character, and 1 number. but when I choose memorable password (which i use almost exclusively for passwords that can't easily be pasted or autofilled) there is the option for "separator" but it uses the same separator for all words which means that I have to modify the password to meet the requiremnts. It would be nice if there was an option to make a memorable password "complex" by adding random separators that could be configured to use special and numbers or just numbers or just special. Also currently when you configure for "capitalize" it makes one random entire word capital, would be nice if that option gave the ability to not have a full word capitalized but either the first, last or a random letter maybe.

I found this post and figured I could add here but if it needs to be a new post I could do that also

  • Hey @cshenberger, thanks for your feedback and suggestions. I've gone ahead and filed an internal feature request for more customization options in the memorable password generator. Although I can't make any promises, I'll be sure to add your comment there for the team's consideration.
    Thanks again for the feedback!

My wish would be for the ability to set a default password format in the browser plugin. For instance, I'm partial to the memorable password format, but 1P browser plugin always suggests a random format password when I register for a new service. It would be great if the browser plugin would at least behave like the 1P app, which remembers the last password format I used when it creates a new password.

  • Hi @_beowulf,

Thanks for your suggestion here for the password generator in 1Password in the browser to act in a similar fashion to the app, where it remembers the last used password format.

I've passed your thoughts along to the team by way of a feature request. We appreciate your feedback!

  • Hi @_beowulf and @CapableClatter,

Please excuse my previous post. With regard to the password generator in 1Password in the browser, when selecting Memorable Password, Random Password, or Pin Code, it is possible to toggle on the option of Use as default for suggestions which will allow the extension to remember the last password format used. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip! I've never noticed that before. Like love, I was looking for it in all the wrong places.

  • @_beowulf, you're most welcome! 😀
