1PW8: No small auth prompt in browser, instead entire app launches

I've updated to v8 a few minutes ago and found the "new" auth workflow to be a lot less elegant than in v7.
In v7 a small window in the browser opened for master password entering.
Now in v8, the entire app opens and asks for the master password and closes again after entering.

Why was this changed?

  • Hi @crackout, thanks for letting us know your first impressions of 1Password 8. We appreciate hearing from you!

What's happening here is that the two apps are unlocking together. We've tried to create as unified an experience as possible with 1Password 8, whether you're in the browser or working in apps on the desktop. In order to do this, we've created something called a "shared lock state", which basically means that when you unlock one of the apps, the other opens with it. That way you don't have to put in your password multiple times across apps; just one will do.

Regarding 1Password in your browser in particular: it now unlocks through the 1Password for Mac app, which may also present a prompt for TouchID if you've got that enabled (it's really convenient; I'd recommend giving that setting a try if you haven't yet!).* In any case, that desktop window should also disappear when you've finished entering your password, so that it gets out of your way and you can go about your business.

I hope this proves informative. If there's anything we can help with from here, or any feedback you'd like to offer, let me know and I'll be happy to assist. 👋

    Hello Peter,

depending on the set desktop window size, the prompt might fill the entire screen, just for a master password request.
    This feels very disruptive.

Besides, as of today, I can't call myself one of the individuals blessed with TouchID.

  • Yeah, it's definitely less ideal than with Touch ID. This integration is optional, though. If you'd like to disconnect 1Password on your Mac from 1Password in your browser, right click on the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar, select Settings, and turn off "Integrate with 1Password app".
