Hello,

we upgraded to 1Password8 yesterday.
Now i have an problem to unlock 1Password8.

My Password contains a tilde char (~) which cannot be entered in the password input.
Or better: It cannot be entered if the password is hidden. If i click on the eye Icon and the password will be displayed raw, i can write the tilde (~).

Which means i have to show the password each time i have to unlock 1Password.

1Password Version: 80700098, PRODUCTION

  • Hey @codmdu,

This sounds like you might be using a different keyboard layout. If you have to press ⌥ Option to get a ~ character on your keyboard, then you're right – it won't appear when the account password field is concealed.

If you're using a strong account password already, such as four words, there generally isn't much security benefit in adding special characters. However, if you do, stick to special characters that don't need the ⌥ Option key to type. The same goes for accented characters. For example, if my account password included a é, I would have to type ⌥E to get the ´ accent, then e to add the letter. The account password field would only show the e unless the field was exposed.

In your case, I'd recommend changing your 1Password account password so that it doesn't include special characters which require ⌥ Option to type. (Anything you can type with ⇧Shift will work perfectly, however.)

    I hope that helps!

    Hey @ag_will,

so you suggest me to change my password which i used a long time with 1password ?
It worked fine for versions, so 1Password 8 is a downgrade in that case..

In any applications i can use special chars, but not in 1 password 8 ?
I also think that a Master-Password can't be secure enough, because with that password you have access to other thounds of password..

Unfortunately the answer was not satisfactory.

Hi @codmdu, I'm sorry to learn of the frustration regarding this. I can understand why it might not feel ideal to need to change an account password going from one generation of the app to another, and I do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

This was a change that needed to happen in the app for the sake of maintaining compatibility across devices (among a number of other technical reasons), and as the apps evolved this was a change we needed to make. So @ag_will's recommendation is still the way to go in this case.

In case it's helpful, here are the characters you can use to create your new password.

    • Letters: A-Z and a-z
    • Numbers: 0-9
    • Space: space (entered by pressing Space bar)
    • Symbols: ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / \ : ; ? @ [ ] ^ _ { } ~

I also think that a Master-Password can't be secure enough, because with that password you have access to other thounds of password..

I very much agree! And fortunately, it's quite possible to create a very strong, but still usable password (especially if you keep in mind the qualities that make a strong password: random, unique, and memorable). And while I'm sorry not to be able to offer a more immediate solution from our end, our Strong Password Generator can help you come up with a new password that will meet those requirements.

    I hope this is helpful.

@PeterG_1P Thanks for the answer, but i'm also an developer and don't understand why it is not possible to allow some special chars e.g. the tilde (~).
You can write the tilde and the unlock of 1Password works fine, the only issue is the password hide feature. That is the reason why i can't understand that it is not possible to use the chars while the password is hidden.

  • Hey @codmdu:

Thanks for following up on this. While I can't promise anything, it is something we're tracking internally.
