Prompted for Password at Mac Startup

When I startup my Mac 1Password8 prompts for login, in spite of an un-checked "Start at login" checkbox (Preferences > General). What can I do to keep from being prompted to enter my master password until I want to unlock 1Password?

Thanks.

  • Hello @mjudman! 👋

I'm sorry to hear that you're being prompted to unlock 1Password unexpectedly. Do you happen to have 1Password listed in your Mac's login items by any chance? You can find your Mac's login items by using this guide: Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac - Apple Support (CA)

If you don't see 1Password listed here then are any browsers listed in your login items? If you remove the browser from your login items and restart your Mac then does that resolve the issue?

I look forward to hearing from you. 😊

My Login items doesn't have 1Password or any browsers. (I checked that yesterday.) Thanks.

Is this from the Mac app? I wasn't 100% sure it was the app and not perhaps 1Password in the browser. Is it possible to share a screenshot here? Please be mindful this is an open public community. Conceal any data you do not want in public in said screenshot.

On three restarts I just did, this is what I got:

However, most of the time, but not today (weird!) the prompt above was overlaid with this:

I installed the Safari extension yesterday (but wouldn't swear it was absent earlier).

    Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the screenshots. When you restart your Mac are you checking the "Reopen windows when logging back in" option? If you are then can you uncheck that option and try to restart again?

I look forward to hearing from you. 🙂

Dave, that's the answer. With "reopen windows" de-selected, 1Password doesn't start or prompt. In my case, I'm having a backup application (Carbon Copy Cloner) shut down the computer on completion of it's backup task. It doesn't include a reopen option.

Really not a serious problem, but it does explain the behavior. Basically resolved.

    Thanks.

Well, another one solved. 🎉 Thanks for sticking with us @mjudman I'm not sure if CCC can overcome this but you might want to reach out to them. It may be possible with an additional script of some kind.
