1P8 and disk passwords

I'm wondering if there's a way to enter passwords for disks in macOS when their dialogs come up as the disks are mounted.

They typically say something like "enter password for volume "Macintosh HD" or whatever. A command-\ doesn't bring up the search function if that password window is active; one has to say make Finder active, then search, then copy, then focus back on the password dialog and paste.

It would be great if 1P could figure out that it should enter the password for "Macintosh HD," but I suppose that's not happening. But at least when the dialog is active it should allow a search so one doesn't have to click out of the dialog and back in. Or open up 1P's window, etc.

    Thanks for reaching out about this! I was able to open both Universal Autofill and Quick Access when I was prompted for a disk image password (I don't have any encrypted disks, just a disk image). Does neither Quick Access or Universal Autofill open for you when the dialog is prompting for your encryption password? Let me know, and I can dig in further with you.

    They open but fill the wrong password. Probably the system password, which isn’t correct, and no way to select the cortect ones

    In that case, if you use Quick Access (Command+Shift+Space), you should be able to search for the appropriate password, then use Shift+Return to fill it into the the dialog. Let me know how you get on with that!

    Thanks, but as I noted in the original post command backslash does NOT allow a search when the disk password window is active, ie when you've clicked in it. One can use command shift space to bring up the search, and then arrow to say a password, but when you use Shift return you get a dialog asking "Would you like to link your "[name of volume]" item in 1Password with your macOS user account login?" the only options are fill once, fill and update login, or cancel. None, as far as I can tell, will lead to the correct password being filled in. And it would be a bad item to have my drive passwords be the same as my system password.

    Thanks for following up on this. In short, the Autofill shortcut (⌘+) behaves two different ways depending on how many matching items there are:

    • If there's only a single item that 1Password thinks is a match, it will immediately fill.
    • If there's multiple possible items, Quick Access will open scoped to the currently focused application or website, where you can then search.

    In this case, because 1Password is detecting this field as one for macOS user account login, using the Autofill shortcut will immediately fill. Using ⌘+Shift+Space to open Quick Access will keep 1Password from automatically matching, and allow you to select any available login, even one that wouldn't normally be suggested for that context.

    Fill once will fill a item into the currently selected field, without making any changes to the item. Fill and update login will fill that item, and then add a new Linked Apps entry for the focused item to the item that was filled, allowing it to be suggested in the future. This wouldn't change the password for either your drive, or your macOS user account password, it would just suggest your drive passwords as well as your macOS user account password.

    For your situation, it sounds like using Fill once would be your preferred option, as it will keep your drive passwords from being suggested as an option in the context of your macOS user account item.

    Additionally, I've shared your thoughts with the team, to see if we can not suggest the macOS user account in the context of encrypted drives.
