Increased YubiKey Support?

I'm happy that 1Password provides support for YubiKey and other FIDO2 or WebAuthn hardware-based security keys when logging into the 1Password website. Does 1Password have plans to add greater functionality for these keys such as:

  1. Ability to unlock the 1Password app with a YubiKey instead of a Master Password - This would be helpful for macOS devices that don't have a Secure Enclave and cannot support Touch ID
  2. Ability to store hardware-based OTP codes - YubiKey uses a separate app called Yubico Authenticator for the services that support this

1Password Version: 8.7.1
Extension Version: 2.3.3
OS Version: macOS 12.4

    Hey there @bmkaiser! 👋

Generally-speaking, we like to play our cards pretty close to the vest when it comes to discussing what the future of 1Password might look like; so we don't have any specifics to share as to what additional functionality for hardware keys might look like down the road.

That said, we've recently joined the FIDO Alliance to help build safer, simpler, and faster login solutions and we've even got a nifty sneak-peek teaser as to what the future of WebAuthn and 1Password looks like -- so we're excited to see what the future holds! ✨

+1 to this request. It would be great if 1Password offered Yubi support as an alternative to Touch ID

  • Interesting idea nobledust3753

I'll share your thoughts with the team.

I would really appreciate this too. I have a YubiKey plugged into my Mac most of the time to secure SSH keys. So, using it, instead of a password, to unlock 1Password would be provide an extra level of security should password stealing malware sneak onto the Mac. Tx

  • Thanks for the feedback and sharing your use case, @sainsworth! I've added you to our internal tracker on the topic. 👍🏻
