1Password 8 + extension Randomly activates

After upgrading to 1p8 (mac app and extension) the extension will randomly "activate" - i.e. it will become the primary app so typing no longer registers on the previously active app (chrome, or anything else), and instead typing is associated with the 1password application triggering random hot keys. This is incredibly annoying and unique to 1password 8 (never happened on prior versions).

The reproduce
1. run 1p extension in chrome
2. run 1p electron app
3. attempt to type something into any application (browser is probably easiest)
4. at some point during typing, maybe every 10 sec or so... the 1password app will become active (in the mac toolbar) and all typed events will be sent to the 1p app as if they are hotkeys.

solution - disable the browser extension - this is obviously non ideal as autofilling from the mac app is garbage and rarely works as expected using hotkeys in the browser.

  • has anyone else experienced this?
  • is this a known issue?
  • is there a reasonable fix?
  • can i just not use the extension? - ideally autofill would work from the mac app..

1Password Version: 8.8.0
Extension Version: 2.3.7
OS Version: macOS 12.4
Browser:_ Chrome
