Mac Firefox 1Password 8 Extension No Longer Works with Private Browsing and Removing History

A few days ago, I upgraded 1Password on my Mac to version 8.8. When I installed the Firefox extension, it complained saying [You'll need to turn off "Never Remember History" and "Always Use Private Browsing Mode" to use 1Pasword.]

With earlier versions of 1Password, this was not a problem. Due to (what I think are) security and privacy reasons (which is why I selected 1Password years ago), I prefer to run my browser in 'Private Browsing' mode, and prefer to remove all cookies when closing Firefox. Since all I want to do (while browsing) with 1Password is to allow me to select a site, and have it plug in a userid/password, I don't understand why history needs to be retained, and Private Browsing cannot be used anymore.

If this is going to be a limit with 1Password in the future, I will likely move to a different password management product, and will not recommend 1Password to my clients (I provide technology support to people who live in my community).

Please advise. Thank you.

I have today upgraded to 1Password 8 on Windows and immediately ran into this issue with Firefox. Like the OP I have very good and longstanding reasons for running my browsers in private mode and never remembering history.

I use (and have often recommended) 1Password as part of an overall browsing security and privacy strategy and was particularly shocked by the glib instructions provided to simply Turn on “Remember history” or “Use custom settings for history”. This advice was provided with no discussion of the privacy implications of doing so or any justification for why the 1Password extension now works in a way that requires users to significantly degrade their overall privacy.

Please rethink this implementation of the browser add-in and at the very least provide an explanation and justification for why such a design decision was made.

  • Hi @rckingsley / @Midshipman:

1Password for Firefox needs the ability to write to the local database to store data. If Firefox is configured to always launch in Private Browsing mode, then 1Password doesn't have the ability to write to that local database.

If you'd like to use 1Password in Firefox as well as browse in Private Browsing mode, configuring Firefox to not open in Private Browsing mode automatically, then manually launching a Private Browsing window would be your best bet. You can configure 1Password to be allowed in Private Browsing mode in the extension settings page.

My wife just ran into this after upgrading to 8.8. I will stay on 1Password7 until this is resolved.

This is a very poor implementation that does not consider your customer's privacy and security preferences. Explaining it is not sufficient - it HAS to change back to the way it worked until now. If not, we will find another password manager, which would be a shame after using 1Password for many years. But the current implementation is simply not acceptable, explanations or no.
