Why Aren't items in 'New Item" and 'Categories' listed alphabetically?

In struggling to find out how I can generate a new password I was directed by the Forum to "New Item" (which didn't help) and I noticed there are 22 new items randomly listed with no discernible order. Why not do the obvious and list them alphabetically? Ditto with 'Categories" on the home screen where there are 11 randomly listed items

  • Hi @JimH,

Passwords can be generated on any password field. You'll find them in a couple different categories, but Logins and Passwords would be the most common:

You can also find the password generator within the 1Password browser extensions:

I do see your point about how ordering the categories on the side bar alphabetically, or having more control over how they're organized, might be helpful though so I'll share that with the team. Thanks for giving us this feedback and let me know if you have any questions. 🙂

Thanks for your helpful reply about creating a new password. Re your second suggestion, when I click on the browser icon I only see the New Item screen per your first suggestion ie no browser extensions. If I remember correctly there are various posts complaining that the password generator is no longer available via the browser extension which has been my experience

  • Happy to help, @JimH!

We do have an ongoing feature request to make the password generator available elsewhere in the app, I can add a proxy vote on your behalf if that's something you'd like to see in the future. It is currently available in the browser extensions though, I'll clarify the steps:

    1. Open your browser of choice that has the 1Password 8 extension installed: Get started with 1Password in your browser
    2. Click the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar
    3. Click the ≡ menu
    4. Select Password Generator

Let me know how that works for you. 👍🏻

Doesn't work for me. I just see the quick access menu. Please add my vote for this feature.
The previous 1PW version gave quick easy access to password generator and I can only assume a lot of people had to work quite hard to screw things up so badly

  • Hi @JimH:

To confirm, are you clicking on the 1Password icon in the menu bar (at the top of the screen next to the time, battery, and network / Wi-Fi icons), or the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar?

The password generator is available in 1Password in the browser, accessed by clicking the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar. I've highlighted it here in Chrome:

I'm clicking on the icon in the menu bar. Left click opens Quick Access. Right clicks shows Open 1PW, Quick Access, Lock, Preferences and Quit

  • Hi @JimH,

Appreciate the update. To clarify, the password generator can be found within the 1Password browser extension, which looks like this when compared to the menu bar icon:

If you're not seeing the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar, you can find some troubleshooting steps for your specific browser on our website:

Let me know how this goes! 🙂
