1Password 8 keyboard shortcuts are so much worse than 7

First of all, I should say that I'm a big fan of 1Password. It's one of the most important pieces of software I use on a daily basis in my web development job. Thanks, y'all!

Now on to my problem: with 1Password 7 (and all prior versions), I could navigate to a login page and press Cmd-\ in any one of my browsers and it would unlock if necessary (via Touch ID or password) and then either:
A) fill the login form if there was a single match in my password database
or
B) open the browser extension if there are multiple matches so I could choose one.
This worked reliably, and I never had to resort to using the mouse.

Now I have Cmd-\ set as my autofill shortcut, but the behavior when I press Cmd-\ on a login page in my browser is totally unpredictable, with one of the following happening
1. If 1Password is locked, usually nothing happens. Then I have to resort to using the mouse to click on the extension in my browser toolbar.
2. If 1Password is locked, I think that sometimes I get the unlock dialog.
3. If 1Password is not locked and there is a single match in my database, the login form will be filled
4. If 1Password is not locked and there are multiple matches, I get the Quick Access dialog, not the browser extension UI.
Bonus: It often seems to fill in the wrong login, putting in a username where an email address is required.

Here's what I think should happen when I press Cmd-:
2. If 1Password is locked, I should get the unlock dialog, then it should either fill a single match or bring up a list where I can choose from multiple matches.
3. If 1Password is unlocked, it should either fill a single match or bring up a list where I can choose from multiple matches.
I do not want to have to use the mouse. I want a fast, predictable, keyboard-driven workflow.

Basically, 1Password 8 is unusable for my most common workflow. After one day of using it I'm so frustrated that I'm ready to downgrade to 1Password 7, which worked perfectly. I'll try the 1Password 8 beta version first, but if it's not great, I'll have to downgrade.

PS. I don't use the autofill menu because it often blocks other UI elements.

1Password Version: 8.8.0
Extension Version: 2.3.7
OS Version: 12.2.1
Browser:_ Chrome

  • Hi @sbleon:

Thanks for bringing this up. Do you have Keep in the menu bar enabled in 1Password for Mac Preferences? It's in the General section. Additionally, it sounds like you may be running into an issue we've fixed up in our beta and nightly releases where 1Password doesn't immediately recognize the page you're on to fill. Use 1Password beta releases

After switching to the beta release, look in your Login items in 1Password for an item that contains a Linked App of Google Chrome. Edit that item, and remove the link to Chrome.

Let me know how you get on with that!

Hi, Jack. For the time being, I've downgraded to v7 on my Mac. When I have some time I'll try to revisit this with v8.

  • Hi @sbleon,

Thanks for the update. We hope you'll give 1Password 8 another try in the future, let us know if we can help with anything.

    Have a good weekend!
