Feedback on 1Password 8 Quick Access

The new Quick Access workflow is a big step down for my team. We use secure notes to store sensitive data associated with clients. Previously I would:

  • Click the 1Password icon in the macOS menu bar
  • Begin typing to locate the note
  • Once the correct popup was revelead, click the correct field to copy the sensitive data

That's 2 clicks in the same vicinity, and one typing event. No 1Password windows or data left on screen.

To achieve the same workflow, I now have to:

  • Click the 1Password icon in the macOS menu bar (or use the keyboard shortcut- that, at least, is a welcome change (if it didn't exist in 7))
  • Begin typing to locate the note
  • Here's where it goes off the rails: Now I press enter or click the note
  • A new window is opened on the screen where I keep the 1Password app. NOT the same screen I'm working on, because 1Password does not live on my main work screen.
  • I move my mouse to other the other screen and click the field with the data to copy it.
  • The windows stays open. Somewhat sensitive data, stuck on screen (obviously the password is hidden). Even better- open another note, it's ANOTHER open window. You can end up with dozens of these
  • So instead I have to press Escape or click to close the window
  • THAT in turn activates the 1Password app to come to the front on that screen, covering up my work windows, and now I have to use mission control to bring the appropriate window back to the front, or minimize 1Password.

3 windows, across 2 screens, each with it's own associated action. I cringe everytime I do it. Really regretting moving everyone to 1Password at the moment.

v7 was perfect. Really hoping there's some way I can move back to 7's version of quick access. If I gotta have everyone uninstall 8, install 7, and work with legacy software that will eventually be unsupported... I might be done with 1Password honestly.

To illustrate with screen shots, first I deal with this window:

Then I have to interact with and dismiss this window (Note: it's the hidden text in "Example Password" that I need to copy to the clipboard):

And finally I'm stuck with this window being in focus, covering my work data (just a generic image of the 1password app, since I don't want to screenshot my data):

  • Hi @Jason9,

Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed feedback, screenshots and all. I'm sorry to hear Quick Access isn't fitting into your workflow as well as we would hope.

First, I've added a vote on your behalf to a couple feature requests that are being tracked internally that should address:

    • Showing additional fields in Quick Access
    • Which monitor item detail windows open on
    • The main window regaining focus after a detail window is closed

While I can't make any promises on what will come of these requests in the future, I'd like to offer some potential workarounds in the meantime:

Since Quick Access offers shortcuts for the main fields of each item type, saving items as logins or passwords would create the possibility to open Quick Access, locate an item, and copy its password all without touching your mouse or opening a new window. Each item also has its own notes field that function similarly to the bodies of secure note items. Here's an example:

The main 1Password window refocusing when closing the item detail windows seems to be a byproduct of the same option existing in the main app where
returning to the starting point would feel more natural:

I found that closing the main 1Password window stopped it from surfacing after closing detail windows. If you work primarily out of Quick Access it may be worthwhile to use a keyboard shortcut to only open the main window when needed:

I recognize these may not be viable workarounds for reasons outside of this thread, but I'm happy to hear how it goes if you try them. Let me know if you have any questions or other feedback and thanks again for sharing your thoughts. 🙂
