Bug: Unlock prompt out of focus when opening

This is a bug that happens often. I wish I had more details to identify a pattern.

The dialog to unlock 1Password with either Touch ID or a password is out of focus when opening the app. Instead, the app's primary window takes focus.

  • Hi @mgl03

Have you noticed anything specific about the main 1Password window's size? Is it in full-screen, or on another Space on its own? Have you noticed if the window was already open, or spawns when you open 1Password? Any little details like that you can provide might help establish what's going on. I look forward to hearing from you. :)

    Hi @GreyM1P

Good question. The issue occurs when I open 1Password (from the Dock). I only run the app with its window maximized–as large as possible based on my laptop display, without going full screen.

I'll monitor behavior this week, and report details.

  • @mgl03 – Thanks for getting back to me. Let me know what you find when you can, and I'll be able to dig into this a bit deeper with you.

There is definitley a bug with focus. For me, I see the following behavior:

    • In a Safari window, I select a link
    • Page loads but focus is grabbed by 1Password as seen by the 1Password app becoming active

I also see similar behavior with other apps. It seems 1Password is a bit too grabby :-) of focus.

  • @hubbend

Thanks for the reply. Are you only seeing this behaviour with Safari or are you seeing this in other browsers as well (if you're using any)?

If you restart your Mac then does the 1Password for Mac app still steal focus after the restart?

@Dave_1P I only saw it with Safari but did not check any other browsers. I quit Safari and killed all 1Password processes and restarted. That seems to have cleared up the problem.

I came here to share the same issue as @mgl03. I always run 1Password at the maximized window size, and this happens every time. I just tried resizing 1Password to less than maximum size, and the issue went away. Putting it back to maximum, and the focus problem comes back.

  • @hubbend,

Thanks for the update, if you notice it again please let us know so we can investigate further!

    @dixius99,

Thanks for reporting this, it seems this is indeed related to 1Password being in full screen mode. Could I confirm which version of 1Password you're using? We're still investigating so I'll add this thread to the internal report. 👍🏻

@andrew.l_1P Just want to make sure we're using the terms in the same way. For me, it is when the window is maximized (e.g. Option-clicking on the green button in the top-left corner). I never really use full screen mode (e.g. clicking on the green button in the top right corner), so I'm not sure if it is the same there or not. From just trying it now, it seems to behave the same way as when the window is maximized, but this is the first time I've run 1Password in full screen mode.

The version I'm running is 8.9.4, which 1Password tells me is the latest.

  • Appreciate the clarification and details, @dixius99! I'll add these details as well and hopefully we'll have good news to share in the future regarding this. 🙂
