Account/vault constantly locks in v8

I'm noticing that one of my accounts locks regularly. This results in search not finding items and having to constantly enter the password for that specific account. Note, I'm not talking about the master password for the whole app, just one specific family account inside the app. I have both a company team account and a family account and one keeps locking after a few hours. It's quite frustrating when I know an item should show up in search but it doesn't, and then I realize the account locked itself again.

Is there a setting to change this or is it a bug, or perhaps expected change of behavior from v7?

  • Hey there @maxionic

I wouldn't expect a specific account to lock on its own (it would be the whole 1Password app when Auto-Lock activates), but it's possible that the family account isn't being unlocked when you open 1Password and enter the account password for your business account.

Previously, 1Password would have unlocked all your accounts after you unlocked the first-added one. This was something we got feedback from our business customers about, and they were keen to avoid the scenario where their employees might already have a pre-existing family account with 1Password, added to the apps. Then, they're issued with their business account and add that to the apps. In that situation, even if the business account admins have set a longer account password requirement, that pre-existing family account would be able to unlock the business account as well. Individual and family accounts have a minimum account password length of 12 characters, so this was seen as a potential loophole in the longer account password requirement for business accounts.

In 1Password 8, each account unlocks individually with its account password. Because each account still has a unique Secret Key, and it's the combination of both the account password and the Secret Key which derives the actual Account Unlock Key (something you'll never actually see), it's safe to use the same account password for both your family account and business account. The Account Unlock Keys which encrypt and decrypt your data for each account will still be different (and just as different, in terms of randomness) from each other as before.

When you’re invited to join a team, you’ll be asked to create a account password. Because you already use 1Password, enter the account password you already use.

Then you’ll be able to unlock the 1Password apps with your one account password to see the information in all your accounts.

How to use multiple accounts, from the 1Password Support website.

If you use Touch ID or an Apple Watch to unlock 1Password, it'll unlock all the accounts you've added at the same time, whether their account passwords are the same or not.

I hope that clarifies things, but if you have any questions (and I realise that's very possible!), please do let me know. :)

Thanks for the reply and that makes sense. The behavior is really confusing if you aren't expecting that, but now that I've tried locking and unlocking a few times I can see exactly that it's only unlocking the account with the matching password. With TouchID both are unlocked. I suppose I just need to get used to the change now that I understand how it works.

Glad to hear that helped a bit. It will probably take some adjustment but as you say, Touch ID will unlock both your accounts together, so this should only be a hurdle if you're unlocking by entering the account password. We'll be here if you need anything, so please do ask if that's the case. :)
