Chrome extension is not working at all

this thread looked promising but I think my issue is different. After I rebooted my machine, the chrome extension isn't working at all.

  • It doesn't offer to fill passwords in the browser
  • If I click on the icon in the toolbar, the first time it does open the 1password application which prompts me for my password. However, once I enter my password the extension still shows a button "Open 1password".
  • If I close the extension window and open it again, it just says "Unlocking..." with a spinning wheel. Note that the application is running and unlocked.
  • At one point when I clicked the extension icon it wasn't doing anything at all.
  • Right click -> Settings opens a new tab but it's blank.
  • Right click -> Check for Updates says I'm running the latest version (as does the application if I try to update that).

I've rebooted my machine a couple times, updated Chrome from 105 to 106, disabled/enabled the extension, removed and re-installed the extension, nothing has helped. I've been using 1password for a year or so and it's been working fine until today.

One other weird thing is, when I tried to sign into 1password.com it told me "this machine has been deactivated" - which also happened to me on a different PC last night, although I didn't check whether the extension was working there. I don't use that machine a lot so I assumed it had just been too long and something expired, so I didn't give it much thought, but the machine I'm on now gets used every day.

Some errors from the console if I inspect background.html:

[972x] Unchecked runtime.lastError: Could not establish connection. Receiving end does not exist.
[50x] Unchecked runtime.lastError: The message port closed before a response was received.
[4x] Unchecked runtime.lastError: No frame with id [XXX] in tab [YYY]

[7x, Warning] background.js:2 Could not collect all frames that were initially found.

ok, now if I click the icon to close and then re-open the extension window I see nothing but a spinner in the middle of the window, and this in the console:

[popup] Not attempting to connect to desktop app: already connected or connecting to desktop app
background.js:2 Decided not to attempt reconnection to the desktop app.
background.js:2 Loaded page details in 0.39999999990686774 ms.
background.js:2 Analyzed the page in 0.30000000004656613 ms.

ah, I'll just attach the full console log (note I redacted something that looked like an account ID just in case, but I can supply it if needed)... argh, I guess you can only attach images?

and.... of course after I spent ~30 minutes debugging this and another ~15 putting the message above together, right after I sent this message it mysteriously just started working. no idea why.

I mean, the spinner was churning for several minutes, multiple times, both with and without the "Unlocking..." message, so I wasn't just being impatient by any reasonable definition.

  • Hey @salty,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, the behaviour you were experiencing did indeed seem strange.

If you run into any further issues I think it would be helpful if we could take a closer look into what may be going wrong. In that case please attach the following reports to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com with a link to this thread.

I do however, hope things are smooth sailing from here on!
