1Password in Tor Browser

I've installed the 1Password extension in Tor Browser for Mac. I've turned off 'Always use private browsing mode'. But when Tor Browser opens a new tab it doesn't remember that I'm logged into 1Password.

Is there a setting I can change to resolve this?

1Password Version: 8.9.8
Extension Version: 2.3.8
OS Version: macOS 13.1
Browser:_ Tor Browser

  • Hi @christiaanb

I've tested this on my end and I initially ran into the same issue you've described when I only had "Always use private browsing mode" turned Off.

Changing a few additional settings in the Privacy and Security settings section of the Tor Browser settings (click the three vertical lines in the top right, click Settings > Privacy and Security) to the settings shown in the screenshot below appeared to allow 1Password to remain logged in and offer autofill suggestions each time I opened a new tab.

If you temporarily change your settings to match those in the screenshot, does this issue persist for you?

Hey @christiaanb, I saw that you mentioned this:

But when Tor Browser opens a new tab it doesn't remember that I'm logged into 1Password.

How does the browser not remember that you're logged into 1Password? Do you have the extension locked and then find that it locks up when you click to open a new tab? Or does the extension just stay locked no matter what?

Please provide as much detail as possible so that we can get a clearer picture about what is going on. If you have any screenshots, please feel free to upload them for us to review. Just make sure they do not contain any sensitive info.

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Hi Joy, I find that the extension remains locked no matter what. I click on the 1Password extension icon in the toolbar and this opens a new tab, requiring me to sign into 1Password.com (which I need to change to 1Password.eu). After signing in the 1Password extension icon still shows as locked. If I click on it again it opens a new tab and I need to sign in again.

If I right-click on it and go to Settings > Accounts & Vaults there is no account showing as signed in. And if I click on Sign In to a new account from there it also opens a new tab. And the 1Password icon remains locked.

Hey @christiaanb Thanks for following up. 🙂

When you click 'Sign in to a new account' and then enter your account information, do you see this popup show in your browser?

If so, could you try clicking 'Add' and seeing if the account is added to the extension as we'd hope?

If that doesn't work, I have a couple further thoughts:

    • Do you use any other browsers besides Tor?

      • If so, is the behaviour any different in those browsers?
    • When looking at the Settings (like in your screenshot), can you try turning off the 'Integrate with 1Password app' setting under General?

Beyond that, if the issue is persisting we can get you to generate some logs and forward them to our support email for further investigation.

Let us know how things go!

Oh man, I was being stupid. That solved my problem, thanks. I kept ignoring that prompt to "Add account to 1Password" because I thought it was 1Password asking me something about my 1Password account, unrelated to the plug-in for the browser.

I still don't quite get it though. Why is it asking me if I want to "add account"? What exactly does it mean by account?

Hey @christiaanb we don't officially support Tor. That means the extension is unable to communicate with the app to share the same lock state (and accounts). In order to save and fill in the browser, you would need to first add an account to extension. It would have to be the account that you use to sign into the app and at 1Password.com.

It sounds like you did try to add your account, but the process was a bit confusing and not as intuitive. I can definitely understand where you're coming from with that, and I will share some feedback about it with our team here. Hopefully there will be improvements on this front in the future.

We appreciate your time and patience! Let us know if you have any other questions.
