Bug: iOS Safari Autofill ignores Favorites in 1Password 8

After updating to 1Password 8 for iOS, the Safari Autofill no longer prioritizes 1Password logins marked as Favorites. Instead of seeing my main login (which is marked as a Favorite), I only see less important secondary logins. This occurs on a wide variety of sites and does not seem to be limited to certain sites. If I had to guess, it seems like the Safari Autofill options are now sorted alphabetically instead of by whatever algorithm was in place with 1Password 7 that correctly accounted for Favorites—and perhaps other things, e.g. recently/frequently used perhaps?

In order to retrieve the password in this situation, now I need to open 1Password and manually copy the password, so this is a very inconvenient regression. For now, I have uninstalled 1Password 8 on iOS and switched back to 1Password 7, which does not exhibit this problem.

At the risk of derailing my bug report above, as a UX software developer with 20 years of experience in the industry, allow me a momentary digression to offer some general feedback about autofilling passwords in Safari on iOS: I know 1Password is pushing for users to switch to the 1Password extension to autofill passwords, but I have found this extension to be almost completely unusable and I am personally not interested in switching to the extension. Clicking the 1Password extension icon on a form field does nothing about 90% of the time for me. The only way I can reliably get the 1Password dropdown to show up with the extension seems to be to rapidly tap the 1Password icon 8-10 times, and it finally will pop up sometimes. So it's just straight up buggy in my experience. But setting that aside, even if the extension worked perfectly, I wouldn't want to use it. This is a philosophical software debate that clearly we have differing opinions on, but the native Safari Autofill is orders of magnitude better in my opinion—it's fast, reliable, and (most importantly) native functionality in Safari. This beats the extension's HTML/DOM implementation of the password autofill 10 times out of 10 for me. A fast native autofill (even if limited to 1-2 autofill options) is far more important to me than having whatever "smarts" are perceived as being built into the extension version of the autofill dropdown.

Any response here from the 1Password team on the Safari Autofill bug described above? Are you able to reproduce this bug and verify that it's an unintended regression?

  • Hey there @theremin

The suggestion that appears in the QuickType area of the keyboard on iOS is something which iOS's built-in Password AutoFill system decides, not 1Password.

Password AutoFill will ask 1Password for any items which match a specific URL (the website in view, or an app's Associated Domain), and 1Password will return them to iOS. Password AutoFill then decides which one to suggest on the keyboard.

If you find that iOS is routinely choosing one that isn't the most suitable, you can turn off suggestions in 1Password's Settings > AutoFill > "Show filling suggestions". Then, you'll only ever see the "🔑 Passwords" button on the keyboard instead and tapping that will open the 1Password pop-up. Or, you can bypass the suggestion and open 1Password directly by tapping the 🔑 key icon instead.

I hope that answers your question fully, but please do let me know if I can be of any further help. :)

This is absolutely not the case. I have switched back and forth between 1Password 7 and 8 multiple times to verify this, using the exact same vault, and the login that appears in the Autofill suggestion is different between 1Password 7 and 8. I'm using the exact same version of iOS, on the same iPhone with same settings, and I'm not changing anything besides the version of 1Password I'm using for Safari Autofill. With 1Password 7, logins that I have marked as favorites appear first in the Safari Autofill suggestions, and with 1Password 8, the first login I see is the one that's alphabetically first. So something is definitely different under the hood with 1Password 8.

I have an iPhone screen recording that demonstrates the issue as I swap between 1Password 7 and 8, but it shows email addresses from my vault, so I'd rather not share it publicly. Would it be helpful to share this with 1Password support?

Any response here? I have a video demonstrating this bug. Should I submit or a support request, or is there a different way to share it with the 1Password team?
