How does the extension connect to the Desktop app?

I wonder how an extension can connect to a desktop application running on the same computer, as it seems as if it does not use services running TCP to do this (I might be wrong). I have used netstat and tcpview (on Windows) without discovering 1Password.exe running services on any ports, so I am not sure how the extension technically achieves connecting to something locally. The only network activity is outgoing to 54.157.251.122 (AWS), which I assume is for syncing to the cloud. Any brief docs on the technicalities of this?
