when entering a SSN item, it has a field for "password" right under the SSN. But it is not clear what that is for? If you don't enter a password in that spot, it won't show the SSN in the item. If you do enter a password in that spot, then the SSN shows up in the save Social Security Number item. But it isn't clear why the password is necessary or what it is for.

All the categories provide some superset of fields asked in the last years by customers. They are pre-created for convenience, so you don't need to add a field as custom field in case you need it. These fields don't need to be filled. If you don't need it, leave it empty or just delete it.

However, in case of the SSN, you seem to have a slight misunderstanding. There is the first field "Name", where you are supposed to enter a title, something like "SSN for Tertius3" in my case. The field below, labeled "Number" is for the actual SSN. It has a field type of "password", so it is displayed as ****** instead of clear text, like a password, so it cannot just be peeked.
