Native Mac Autofill

Hi,

even tough the 1password extension for safari tries to mimick the look-and-feel of Apples autofill UI, it's unfortunately not even close in UX.. Apparently there are options now to integrate with apples native solution, same as iOS and as those guys are doing: https://minimalistpassword.com/autofill-without-browser-extensions

Are there any plans to support this on the mac?

Best,
Valentin

  • Hello @vman! 👋

I'm not personally aware of plans to support Password AutoFill on macOS, we do currently support filling using 1Password in the browser as well as Universal Autofill: Use Universal Autofill in apps and browsers on your Mac

That being said, I'm happy to pass along your request and feedback to our product team. Even if we don't support Password AutoFill in the future we're definitely interested in learning how we can improve the browser extension. Can you tell me a little more about where you feel that 1Password for Safari's UX is lacking compared to Password AutoFill? 🙂

Thanks! Just to give you two examples:

    • Unlock works unreliably: sometimes the Safari Extension fails to unlock even though the main app is unlocked: Sometimes TouchID is not working in Safari, sometimes it switches to another desktop to open the main 1Password App,...
    • It's conflicting with the system autofill: (for phone numbers, mail, etc), when pressing "arrow down", 1Password launches even though I'm trying to select one of the phone numbers/mails provided by the system, sometimes 1password shows atop the system autofill. I've already disabled auto-showing the 1password suggestions but still run into annoying problems a lot

Another issue i'm experiencing right now:

I'm trying to use an autogenerated password when signing up. 1Password doesn't suggest one when i'm selecting the password field. I'm generating one myself in the safari extension. Now the extension shows a suggestion in alongside the input field, however, clicking it doesn't do anything. Experienced it here: https://www.bafoeg-digital.de/ams/BAFOEG/registrierung

I'm also running into this issue where it's unable to save the generated password (see the notification below) when clicking on "copy":

Hi @vman, thanks for reaching out. I'll reply to all the things you brought up below:

Unlock works unreliably: sometimes the Safari Extension fails to unlock even though the main app is unlocked: Sometimes TouchID is not working in Safari, sometimes it switches to another desktop to open the main 1Password App,...

Hmm, what version of the extension do you have installed in Safari and what version of the 1Password app are you using? Does the issue seem to appear after your computer goes to sleep or after it has been idle for some time? Do things improve if you fully quit Safari, fully quit the app, and relaunch both?

Using two password managers can cause issues with being able to select the right login to use. Moreover, it can interfere with saving your information, causing confusion about where your data is stored. Because of that, we strongly recommend turning off your browser's built-in password manager and using 1Password to fill your personal information (such as phone numbers and addresses).

Here's a guide on how to disable your browser's built-in password manager: https://support.1password.com/disable-browser-password-manager/

Here's how to use 1Password to fill identities and credit cards: https://support.1password.com/credit-card-address-filling/

Please note that "Arrow down" is the keyboard shortcut that 1Password uses to select an item. Pressing "arrow down" will invoke the inline menu, even if the inline menu is set to not appear automatically. The only way to avoid that would be to completely turn off the inline menu, but doing that would apply to all websites. In such a situation, you would always have to click the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar, select your login and click Autofill to fill. If you don't mind adjusting your workflow to that, please let me know.

I took a look at the website you shared and had no trouble filling/saving a suggested password on there. It seems like there might be an issue with the extension in your browser syncing to our server and saving your logins (as well as generated passwords). Could you try the following to re-sync your account and see if it helps?

    1. Right click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar and choose Settings.
    2. Under General, disable "Integrate with 1Password app".
    3. Under Accounts & Vaults, sign out of your account.
    4. Sign back into your account.
    5. Go back and re-enable "Integrate with 1Password app".

Let us know how that goes!
