Obervation:
It seems the browsers share their "locked/unlocked" status (regardless of desktop app status)
EXCEPT for Waterfox, which seems to always lock the 1Password browser extension.
And, strangely, if Waterfox is open and 1Password extension is unlocked, all the other browsers open with 1Password extension unlocked !?!

Conclusion: This seems to be a Waterfox issue, but darn strange since its code is derived from Firefox.
I pass this along in case anyone else likes/uses Waterfox.

Test: what is the status of the 1Password browser extension with various browsers under specified conditions

Notes:
1) "open" implies a browser is open on the screen, "closed" implies a browser is closed, minimized.
2) "locked" implies 1password browser extension is locked in the open browser, "unlocked" implies 1password is open in the open browser,
3) Laptop running Windows 10 Home, Ver 10.0.19045 Ver 19045
4) desktop 1password application is version: 1Password for Windows 8.10.3 (81003012)
5) settings for all browsers:
A) Version: All browsers are up to date, all 1password app versions are current
B) Window: Normal, not private
C) Privacy:
Setting: standard
History: remember history
Cookies: keep cookies (Not delete on exit)
Always use private mode: not set
6) Firefox is set to "default" browser
7) Waterfox version: G5.1.3 (64-bit) (since this is the problem child)

Test execution (Where [BROWSER] = firefox, waterfox, brave, edge, chrome):
I if 1Password desktop app is not running/open
A on initial browser load, no browsers unlocked
1 firefox locked
2 waterfox locked
3 brave locked
4 edge locked
5 chrome locked
B [BROWSER] browser open and unlocked, then each other browser open and 1Password status is...
1 firefox 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
2 waterfox locked, unless [BROWSER] = waterfox. Then we unlock it per the test
3 brave 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
4 edge 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
5 chrome 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
C [BROWSER] browser open and unlocked then closed (not relocked), then each other browser open and 1Password status is...
1 firefox 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is closed but unlocked
2 waterfox locked, even if [BROWSER] = waterfox. Once browser is closed, it 1password extension is relocked.
3 brave 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is closed but unlocked
4 edge 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is closed but unlocked
5 chrome 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is closed but unlocked

II if 1Password desktop app is unlocked (minimized to tray)-
A on initial browser load
1 firefox 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
2 waterfox locked
3 brave 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
4 edge 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
5 chrome 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
B browser close and reopen
1 firefox 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
2 waterfox locked, even if [BROWSER] = waterfox. Once browser is closed, it 1password extension is relocked.
3 brave 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
4 edge 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked
5 chrome 1password extension open if [BROWSER] is open and unlocked

  • Hello @sford,

Thanks for taking the time to write in with your detailed message.

waterfox locked, even if [BROWSER] = waterfox. Once browser is closed, it 1password extension is relocked.

The behaviour you are experiencing is expected. While Waterfox is working, it is not officially supported and will not share the lock state with the desktop app as it does with the other browsers you've tested.

I've passed the details of your message along to Product team for consideration of supporting app integration for other browsers such as Waterfox.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
