How will biometric based passkeys allow for access after death?
With passwords you can setup a shared vault or via emergency kit etc.
How is this handled with passkeys ? Thx!

Hi @Bakkes,
For information on how Passkeys are going to work with 1Password, I'll refer you to our below link:

I think it's a good question, and I couldn't easily find an answer in the link you've shared, @ag_josephine. Would you mind sharing more info about recovery methods for passkeys after a user's death?

Hey @rpenco 👋🏻
We actually have a nifty blog post that touches on estate planning, and specifically, how you can help include 1Password.

If there are any specific concerns you have that aren't covered there, let me know and I'd be happy to help dig into them with you.

Thank you, @Blake. I had read this interesting blog post and found the discussion on 2FA very helpful. However, there is no mention of passkeys, and what I am trying to understand is whether adopting passkeys would complicate digital estate planning. It would be great if a future blog post could cover address this.

Anything further on this since July? I would like to start using Passcodes but am hesitant that my designated loved ones won't have access to my biometric passcodes once I die. You said that there was "plenty going on in this area" and would update. What's the update?

Correction--I meant Passkey, not Passcode in my comment above.

Thanks for the question. When you store a passkey in 1Password, your passkey is protected using the same account password and Secret Key that protects all of your passwords and other items. Your loved ones won't necessarily need biometrics to access the passkeys saved in 1Password but they will need your account password and Secret Key.
The best way to ensure that your loved ones have access to the items stored in your 1Password account (including passkeys) is to download and save your Emergency Kit. You can print out the Emergency Kit and write down your account password. Then you can store the Emergency Kit in a personal safe or a safe deposit box. Make sure your loved ones know where the Emergency Kit is stored. Using the Emergency Kit your family will be able to access your 1Password account and your saved passkeys.
